Book of Jashar and book of Wars
The Book of Wars"(Numbers 21:14) The "Book of Jashar" (Joshua 10 12-13) (2 Samuel 1: 17-18)
What are these books? Why were they not considered canon?
There are others too, but right now I am interested in these two.
Thanks.

No one knows what they are or what they said. There are no copies nor have been for thousands of years. This being the case they cannot be considered canon.

Re: Book of Jashar and book of Wars
I think Jashar is online. If they weren't copied this means that there were not used. I did find a whole list of them if anyone is interested.

Re: Book of Jashar and book of Wars
These books among others mentioned in the Tanach are lost, hence are not considered canon.

As for the book of jasher found online, this is not the same book that is mentioned in Joshua and Samuel.

Re: Book of Jashar and book of Wars
Would it be safe to assume that the book of wars of the Lord would contain all the names of those killed in any war (battle) ordered to be done by God and that this book is one of the books that are 'examined in detail' only at Judgment Day?

Re: Book of Jashar and book of Wars
Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Jasher gives a list of possible Jewish texts that may have been referred to as the Book of Jashar. The later reference to claimed translations are listed as poor attempts at faking the book, and I agree based on my previous reading concerning these later books.

Sefer Yashar (The book of Jasher) was an old midrashic work. It isn't scripture by any means, unless you think the metaphorical writings of some old rabbi is inspired by god

Re: Book of Jashar and book of Wars
the same question was asked on another forum:
What happened to the Book of the Wars of the Lord (BaMidbar 21 : 14), Chronicles of the Kings of Israel and Judah, The Book of Jashar (Josh. 10: 13), and the Midrash of Iddo (II Chron. 13:22)?

^ Student, Gil. On the Authorship of the Torah. (Aishdas.org) The author writes: "So far, we have seen the talmudic and midrashic evidence that the forefathers, including Moshe, wrote books other than the Torah that were maintained and studied. However, there is also much internal evidence that there were other books written. Consider the following verses," after which the author cites as examples of lost books Exodus 17:14 (words written in remembrance of the destruction of Amalek), Exodus 24:7 (Book of the Covenant), Numbers 11:26 (recorded ones), Numbers 21:14 (Book of the Wars of the Lord), and Numbers 33:2 (Journeys).
