On Acts 5:30
King James gives this for Acts 5:30
How did they come to give that? In other words, what does the oldest text give word for word?30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree.
Thank you.

Hello downtown! Thanks for your question!

In all honesty, I'm not fluent in Greek, so I'd recommend taking this to the biblical languages forum. I think it's personally an obviously bad translation on the text though. They did not slay him and then hang him on a tree. They slew him BY hanging him on a tree.
Hope this helps!

But how does one slay a person by hanging him on a tree?

What does Peter say in regard to the mode of punishment employed in his execution?
"The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree" (Acts v, 30).
"And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom ye slew and hanged on a tree" (x, 39).
Concerning this, Mrs. Evans says: "With regard to his death, it was said that the Jews slew him and hanged him on a tree; and again that he was taken down from the tree; expressions which do not imply crucifixion, but rather the legal execution for such crimes as the one alleged, that is, stoning to death and the exposure of the dead body upon a stake, or a tree" (Christ Myth, p. 79).
(A quote I got from a Forum/source not given.)

Re: On Acts 5:30
Except in the time, the cross would have been seen as a tree. The terms were quite synonymous. In fact, the text in Acts is quite clear in that they slew him BY hanging him on a tree. It is highly doubtful that Luke would be ignorant of this piece of history, especially seeing as he did a thorough investigation for the book of Luke.
