I watched Darth try to educate you and it was like seeing someone slip around in a room of banana peels as you hopped from one excuse to another trying to find a way that Paul, Jesus etc could call people names while golly gee, we can't.
"Duh, Jesus knew people's hearts and minds." Oh. So knowing people's hearts and minds permits one to use names. OK. Darth points out Paul wasn't that way, didn't know people's hearts and minds. Oops, sunk that criteria, but you sure don't want to admit it, do you?
To answer your question:
By the rules of the day, they were doing it to be malicious. How's that grab you? Were they doing it to be malicious or were they doing it to bring those people back to the truth?
The purpose was public shame as well as protection of those who might be led astray. I'll claim both of those as the purpose of the Screwball Awards. Humor comes in third, with rebuttal to FSTDT as related to all three points. Spectators, I should add, often found these contests humorous.
The whole premise of public shame and riposte was laid out in the article Darth linked to in which one of my guest writers and I gave all the details. You ignored it. It's time to learn that Jesus was not "sanitized for your protection".
If I ever stop doing this sort of work, it won't be because of atheists -- it will be because of Christians like you who have incorrigible tunnel vision and have turned Jesus into Mr. Rogers.
EDIT to add: I found your list of questions. Since they seem to be honest I'm going to prepare answers for them shortly and hope that your prior performance comes of not knowing what you should and being honest about it.Last edited by jpholding; January 4th 2007 at 04:49 PM.

Re: January 2007 Screwballs
Meanwhile, an email in line with the thread title:
I would like to start off by excusing the following which some might view as "impertinence", but what I am about to say must be said. I believe that it is unfair for religious fanatics like yourself to go around spreading false truths. To say that Osiris copied Jesus? I think you need to do a little more homework on the subject. Did they steal Amen (Amen-Ra) too? I think you will learn that Osiris, as well as many other, triplet God myths existed in Egypt, and many other countries, before Jesus even came into existence. If you already know, shame on you. Only a close-minded religious drone could possibly take fact and turn it into romantic fiction to suit the needs of their own agenda, or Christ's (IE- I don't really think he needs your help). What about Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva? They stole it from Jesus too, huh. What a lovely coincidence. Please, before you try to become the "good shepherd" of your own flock, triple check your foundation. Thank you for your time.

This, debatable, teaching is precisely why you are culturally irrelvant-- except among us theology eggheads, that is.

If you don't want answers, but want to stick with what you believe in spite of them, good luck.
I started a thread on this for you just in case you're actually serious or become that way.

As an aside, if DJ wants to win so bad, why doesn't he plug himself on his own blog? That ought to earn him at least 2 more votes.

Re: January 2007 Screwballs
The thread is interesting in that DJ's supposed moral high-ground unraveled after just a few posts. His opening post was prefaced thusly:

Before the thread was even to its second page, he dropped this bomb on lilangelofterror:
He stopped posting for a few pages, but then got right back into the swing of things:
And if that wasn't enough, he pulls out the heavy artillery:
Even his supporters in the thread stopped defending him after that one.

So the moral of the story is, it's wrong to call your debate opponent stupid. Unless you're Doubting John. In which case it's fine. But only because everybody really is stupider than you. Got it. I think.

Re: January 2007 Screwballs
Has anyone heard the Gene Cook interview with John Loftus? I only just found out that it even existed, but it costs like a buck to download it, and I'm too cheap right now to spend that kind of money without knowing if it's gonna be any good.

Re: January 2007 Screwballs
I've got a website nomination:
http://www.hallvworthington.com/index.html
They're not all bad, (but they think only the early church and the early Quakers had the True GospelTM, and that the Kingdom of God comes whenever someone becomes a Christian) so I don't nominate this wholeheartedly.
Edit: Check that--they think Jesus still speaks audibly (from what I gathered) today, so they just started sounding a whole lot weirder. (to me, anyway)Last edited by Meta Knight; January 4th 2007 at 07:40 PM.
