Resting on God's Shoulder…
“Why does God allow 5 year old boys to die of cancer?” Questions such as that cuts deep into our faith in God and life as well. If you've ever asked that question (and you have) then you know there's no answer that will satisfy you. Even the answers that do sound credible will leave us scratching our heads and still asking why.
What if hidden deep within our questions about “Why does God allow _______” is our hunger not for an answer but for God Himself? What if our real question is stated by the Psalmist? “As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my food day and night, while they say to me all the day long, “Where is your God?” (Psalm 42:1–3, ESV, emphasis mine)
When our 2 year old great grandson Colton becomes upset, frustrated, and begins crying because he's unable to figure things out he runs to Ethan his dad buries his head in Ethan's shoulder and his anxieties disappear. There's a Colton in all of us and when something disrupts our lives and our belief system becomes chaotic we need to run to our FATHER bury our heads in His shoulder and allow His Spirit to put our lives at rest.
With our head buried in God's shoulder the questions and anxieties may not go away but the Peace of Jesus given us by the Holy Spirit will overshadow our need for answers. And if there's one thing I am ABSOLUTELY sure of and that is God's shoulder is ALWAYS available to us. There are times in my life when I bury my head for a few minutes and others for days. In fact when I get done writing and sending this out I gotta get back to God's shoulder myself.
I leave you to more than just read and think about the following quote I leave you to etch them on your heart. “To you I lift up my eyes, O you who are enthroned in the heavens! Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maidservant to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, till he has mercy upon us. Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us, for we have had more than enough of contempt.” (Psalm 123:1–3, ESV)
Be Strong in the LORD!
Grace and PEACE,
Gary
