Worst book: The English Patient. Puke. Blech. Yuck. Gag. Hack. Spew Chunks. Vomit. Barf. I couldn't read more than a quarter of it, that's how awful it was.

Victorian Cities by Asa Briggs was as dry as DUST. It makes my non-fiction category. And yes, it's considered a very informative classic.

The Stone Angel by Margaret Laurence just dragged on and on, and it's definitely up there with fiction I don't like. There's just something about her work. I can't wrap my mind around enjoying it.

The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. A best seller some years ago that made me think twice about listening to the critics.

Re: What is the worst book you've read?

Locke's "First Treatise of Government" is probably the most boring, but not the worst. The worst book I've ever read would probably have to be Richard Dawkins' "The God Delusion." I mean, I've seen books out there that attack Christianity and do a good job of it. I've seen books that explain why Christianity is bogus and are actually quite well-written. Dawkins, however, just uses a bunch of big words and makes arguments that clearly show he hasn't done any proper research on the subject. I think I finished that book with a stronger faith in Christ. Go figure.

Re: What is the worst book you've read?

Tactics of Conquest by Barry Malzberg. It's a sci-fi book based on a chess game: specifically, the game is a Fool's Mate, the shortest and most contrived way to lose a chess game. And the book is, likewise, a contrived loss. It was the first and only Malzberg book I ever read; I literally swore off ever again letting my eyes touch his work, and as far as I know I kept to that pledge. I've even skipped over Malzberg stories in sci-fi anthologies.

The world renowned Existentialist masterpiece The Sound and the Fury by Faulkner, worst, book ever written which snuck in and presents itself as something of substance. The books almost made me give up Existentialism... j/k.

The Ultimate Adventure by Daniel Pekarek. My mother got it at a signing in a bookstore that she was coincidentally passing and, knowing my love for sci-fi, bought it for me. It was a horribly written, contrived story with little to no believable character development, repetitive sentences, a complete ignorance to how to use a thesaurus or use the passive voice to accentuate drama...the title alone would have convinced me to not buy it. But it did have a very pretty cover.

      ditto.

There was one really atrocious piece of Ace SF that was truly pathetic. Written by some pre-pubescent fan of Ayn Rand, he reckoned there would be an 8 hour operatic version of Atlas Shrugged, and sex could be had for the asking, just to pass the time.

The Left Behind series. Oh, oh, and Eragon. Purely trash, both of 'em. I weep for our literary future.

I hated reading The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin. It was so dull that I couldn't even finish it, which is a rarity for me.
