What is the worst book you've read?

I'm an intellegent kid, I was just trying to figure the point of reading the entire thing. Would it be worth it? I think if it was abridged in some way I'd have enjoyed the book. I liked the humor, it was just unnecessarily long in parts. A little self-editing would go a long way in my opinion.

But it's a good friend of mine's favorite book. To each his own I suppose.

Here's an idea for reading it in a unique way: don't read it sequentially, just jump in at different places each time you pick it up. See how you like it.

I was going to reply to Semmie, and say I couldn't think of a book I hated either, until I saw this post. The Scarlet Letter was terrible.

I've read books that I knew weren't great literature, but that I enjoyed nonetheless. Eragon and Eldest being in that category.

I'm reading Battlefield Earth right now as well. Quality writing? Hardly. Entertaining? Of course.

I will say that after reading it for like the 3rd time for a class it does get a little boring to keep discussing it.

No. I have no love for Mark Twain. I find his writing drab and uninteresting (and I've read Tom Sawyer, too. Among other things.)

Really? I enjoyed his books. But I do remember groaning in high school everytime I had rediscuss thie books. That grew tiresome, but upon my initial reading in junior high I really liked them.

Well, I don't. It's actually been awhile since I read Tom Sawyer, but I do remember that when I read it, I found it about as exciting as watching paint dry on grass growing on melting ice.

I don't know why. I just don't like Twain.

I can't help but point out again that what people are doing here is simply talking about books the personally didn't like rather than books that are actually bad. Everybody has different tastes but to say Books like Ethan Frome, Huckleberry Finn, or The Scarlet Letter are bad is wrong. You may not have liked then, but that is different than them being "bad" books.

Point taken. I only say it's subjectively the worst book I've ever read. It's "bad" entirely from my perspective.

Objectively, I don't know yet. Left Behind was pretty bad.

Softly walks the beast and Chasm City are the two worst books I remember reading.

I just finished reading Chasm City and really enjoyed it, though not as much as Revelation Space.

Recently I had to give up on Curse of the Mistwraith by Janny Wurts. Flordid, overblown prose, which was a shame as it was a good premise.

Raiders of the Lost Ark, by Campbell Black. Black somehow manages to to take the screenplay of on of the greatest action-adventure movies ever made and make it as dry and dusty as real-life archeology. Like dental work without Novocaine.
