I'm feeling in a controversial mood...
What with all the talk about IDE's, I felt like getting a little bit controversial. So I just want to say that I don't believe that Notepad is an IDE.
It may be an adequate text editor (though personally, I prefer context-sensitive colour coding in my editors), but it is not an IDE. An IDE lets you set debug and break points, compile (or automatically preview within the browser of your choice) your file from within the environment, and a whole host of other IDE type things.
All power to people who create Java in notepad (or another very simple text editor) and then compile from the command line - I've done it on a Sun workstation and it is cool - but don't call Notepad an IDE. The sheer fact that you have to switch to another program to actually do anything with your code shows that it isn't an integrated development environment.

PS. This is slightly just me being facetious, but part of it is serious. I could just use Notepad, but there are good free alternatives that make my life easier, so I do. I mean, come on, I thought programmers were meant to be lazy!My name is Jon and you're more than welcome to use it.

Notepad is definately just an editor, not an IDE as you correctly pointed out

(I am lazy... too lazy to switch from something that I'm used to...)

I was hoping for more of a disagreement. Oh well, guess my attempts at controversy just weren't enough. How about this one - Windows is better than Linux!!

How about something really controversial, like:
"Multiple inheritance is / is not required for true object-oriented programming."

Discuss among yourselves:
IE did a good job of implementing standard CSS

It's shoddier than shoddy. It's showaddywaddy (no, wait, that's somethign else). Mozilla all the way!
And as for multiple inheritance.
I've avoided C++ just so I don't have to learn this. C# and Java both rule it out, bless 'em!
God bless
