I drank heavily prior to being legally allowed to purchase it up through my mid 20s. A friend of mine and I would buy out liquor stores of a certain wine and drink around 10 bottles a day. While I eventually slowed way down to what I drink now (I started paying too high a price in hangovers) he started drinking Jack Daniels and quickly lost his job, his wife, his car and died of a heart attack around the age of 30.

There is a lesson in there somewhere.

Not necessarily. Beer was definitely an acquired taste for me (and probably is for most people), but somewhat unusually, whisky wasn't. I actually liked that stuff from the first.

Beer was an acquired taste for me as well although as you say not for everybody. I have a cousin who's oldest child would sneak up and take a drink of your beer if you didn't keep a close eye on it when he was about 3 years old! He really loved the taste.

It's a sad and terrible thing that high-born folk really have thought that the servants would be totally fooled if spirits were put into decanters that were cunningly labelled backwards. And also throughout history the more politically conscious butler has taken it on trust, and with rather more justification, that his employers will not notice if the whisky is topped up with eniru.

I've seen that, but I don't recall ever seeing beer look like that.

Same here. I'm still not much of a beer drinker, but I liked whiskey from the first time I tried it.

I have a few drinks, slowly for a good celebration. The new year, a birthday, or a new baby. Once in a while my husband and I will patronize a local liquor store while the children are away and share some mixed drinks (jack and coke, a margarita, and a six pack of a decent beer but the six pack lasts for some time usually a week) but we're talking every few months. And I DO enjoy a good glass of chianti or merlot, with a rich italian dinner or a steak but I haven't had a drink in six months (I had a 2 cocktails before I fund out I was pregnant) and won't have another until after the baby comes to celebrate her birth) KG drinks one 12 oz what's called "near beer" or 3.5 percent alcohol every 2 weeks. Yup were hard drinkers here.....
