      Wolfowitz resigns

News outlets report that Paul Wolfowitz is out as World Bank president in the midst of the scandal over his nepotistic promotion of his girlfriend. Discuss.
If there is anything I’ve learned from both conservatives and liberals, it’s that we can have all the “right” answers and still be mean. And when you’re mean, it’s hard for people to listen to, much less desire, your truth.

Let's just hope that the important anti-corruption efforts he's helped out with in Africa don't end up ending because of this scandal.

I think he got pushed out because he is abrasive and was a key architect of the Iraq war. What he did was improper but not firing improper. That said, he was ineffective in the end and needed to be replaced.

Wolfowitz and Rumsfeld - how many young Americans and their families have these two "armchair" patriots to thank for their deaths in Iraq ?

Heard on NPR this morning that this was the first time in the Wold Bank's history that the president has ever been forced to resign.

He didn't invent anti-corruption plans. Also the manner in which he performed these tasks was also very abrassive.

That seems to be the word on the street. Wolfowitz was too much of an insider guy. He wanted his own people to run his own things. No discussion, no debate, no multilateralism. The affair just made it for an easier manner to get rid of him.

Wolfowitz is a "true believer". he couldn't brook any ideological differences.

I didn't say he was perfect at them, or that he was nice about it. But he did a lot of good work, too. It's thanks to his efforts in anti-corruption, for example, that the crackdown on Nigerian scammers has been increased.

Wow... that was such a huge and in-depth look at what Wolfowitz did at the World Bank. Care to add actual details of all the stuff he did there instead of referencing to a thing you heard on a news or radio program?

Wolfowitz, like all neo-cons, can't work well with others. This is very problematic when running a multilateral organization.

Listen to NPR. They've been covering it over the past few days. (Yes, I listen to NPR every morning, believe it or not...)

And not all NeoCons are bad with others. They act no differently than your brand of liberals do.

      My brand? I wasn't aware I had a brand.

      Re: Wolfowitz resigns

Not really an expert on, well, much at all, but it seems to me that certain aspects of what Wolfowitz was trying to achieve were necessary. Clearly just handing out aid to the most corrupt governments in Africa can not continue. I've also heard some positive things about fundraising in the past, for third world countries (though I can't remember the details). I also doubt whether what he did was the worst thing to ever take place within the UN.

Having said all that, maybe he was too abrasive for the job. Not really the right guy to be heading the world bank, despite trying to implement some necessary reforms.
