  • Taking the rare out of "safe, legal and rare"

For years the pro-abortion crowd has told everyone that they want to make abortion "safe, legal and rare." For instance back in 2008 Hillary Clinton proclaimed at a campaign event that she thought abortion should be "safe, legal and rare, and by rare I mean rare." But the reality of the situation is that some really are not interested in the rare part and see a decrease in abortions as being a bad thing.

Case in point, in a tweet earlier this week Cosmopolitan magazine, a long time major advocate for abortions, lamented an increase of babies born in Texas after that state defunded organizations, such as Planned Parenthood, that provide abortions.

The link in the tweet goes to a Cosmo story about a study conducted by the Texas Policy Evaluation Project at University of Texas Austin which found a 1.9% "increase in the birthing rate in counties that once had state-funded Planned Parenthood clinics." And as can be seen by the accompanying sad-face emoji in the tweet Cosmo thinks that people having more babies and less abortions is a negative result.

So much for "safe, legal and rare" -- or at least for the last part. But then what can you expect from a magazine that last year started a campaign trying to get women to say how great abortions are (#ShoutYourAbortion). After all, why would you want to make something that is so positive a rare thing?

Cosmo is a feminist rag. They think doing anything inherently "female" - like having a baby - is setting women back a hundred years.

Oh it wasn't just Cosmo Magazine, it was major news outlets found that the increase in live births by 27 percent was unnacceptable since it was mostly by "poor women." Excuse me, but since when is being poor and having a baby a crime? Since when is being poor and having a baby awful. The claim is that without planned parenthood women do not have access to birth control. Well what about free birth control from the state, medicaid and the health dept and the very fact that they are glossing over the federally funded medicaid for women where by each woman who has income up to 186 percent of the poverty line is entitled to 1 yearly pap smear and free birth control from a medicaid accepting provider? PP glossed over all of these facts. PP is nothing but a death pushing agenda.

"Safe" seems to be far less important than is claimed by most pro abortionists, not just feminists.

They are just celebrating the legacy of Margaret Sanger in trying to make sure poor people are prevented from having children.

              You mean Margaret Sanger?

I am certainly no fan of Sanger's or Planned Parenthood but over the years I've come to realize that she has been misrepresented a great deal. Much of what you read of what she said are quote mines and in a few cases something she never even said. Apparently she was actually pretty much against abortion. She was mainly interested in birth control which was illegal in her time.

That is true generally. However she was ok with using any means necessary to make it happen. Sanger also felt that birt control would reduce unsafe abortion attempts. But her thinking was a bit double minded. She believed in forced sterility among minority groups and the poor.

I know she was a supporter of eugenics which is one of the reasons I'm not a fan of hers.

I know this isn't a debate thread, so I will not debate the issue more than just to point out her positions. Was she against abortion? Sure, but she was also an avid eugenicist that worked on passing laws not only in favor of birth control, but in favor of sterilizing those that were 'unfit', as she saw it, to be parents. In fact, in one of her books, she condemned church's working on making it safer and easier for poor women to have children. Her works are public domain now and you can even read some of her books on gutenberg here. The Pivot of Civilization, in peculiar, gives quite an interesting insight.
