      Re: Peter Hitchens

Funnily enough, Peter Hitchens used to be a Trot, before a conversion later in life. It's probably fair to say that as far as British columnists go, he comes closest to right wing conservative columnists in the US, although he was anti the war in Iraq and often takes a strong stand on civil liberties (he wouldn't be a fan of the patriot act for example). This does make him a little tricky to characterise.

He recently accused Thatcher of not being conservative/right wing enough, which is an, er, interesting point of view. He has a strong following in some circles but his views aren't held by the majority (or at least those who vote for governments).

In some respects he is actually quite similar to his brother, in that both are highly individualistic, passionate voices, that often frustrate, anger and irritate but are generally worth reading.

      This is a decent introduction:

"To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
      And eternity in an hour"

I have to wonder how much of their opinions do depend on the fact that they are brothers. Hitchens is a liberal, athiest hawk with a flexible view on civil liberties, while Peter is a conservative religious dove and a strong defender of civil liberties. Polar opposities on every point.
      Meh.

Very interesting question. I suspect psychologists might have a field day.

Obviously Christopher's conversion to pure evil made him the polar opposite of his righteous brother.

      Figures.

Programming Note: I'm leaving this thread before that last comment goes anywhere.
