Funnily enough, Peter Hitchens used to be a Trot, before a conversion later in life. It's probably fair to say that as far as British columnists go, he comes closest to right wing conservative columnists in the US, although he was anti the war in Iraq and often takes a strong stand on civil liberties (he wouldn't be a fan of the patriot act for example). This does make him a little tricky to characterise.
He recently accused Thatcher of not being conservative/right wing enough, which is an, er, interesting point of view. He has a strong following in some circles but his views aren't held by the majority (or at least those who vote for governments).
In some respects he is actually quite similar to his brother, in that both are highly individualistic, passionate voices, that often frustrate, anger and irritate but are generally worth reading.
