    When it rains, it pours.

And, you shouldn't have to buy a hot water heater. If the water is already hot, why would it need heating?

Water heater replaced. A water damage specialist also came out and talked with my insurance. He guarantees that my home owners will cover everything (minus deductible) and his crew will be out in an hour to pull up the carpet and start removing dry wall before molding starts

good news. once mold gets in you are really in trouble. It is nearly impossible to get rid of. Make sure they spray bleach or something like that in the walls on the studs and floor before replacing stuff. You don't want mold to start growing later behind a wall or under the floor.

They came out and said everything is dry. That was the good news.

The bad news is that they had to put a bunch of stuff outside on plastic and covered in plastic while the basement dried. When we went down there I noticed that nothing was covered any longer and it had been raining all day. Now everything outside that wasn't ruined by the flood is completely soaked by the all-day rain we've been having.

I'm figuring on at least another two grand of damages

why wasnt it covered any more? since they put it outside and covered it, it is their responsibility and they should pay for the damage.

Yeah, when the guys left with the equipment they kept apologizing and I told them I hoped they were insured because they were responsible. He said that I needed to talk to their boss (he'll be here tomorrow when the insurance appraiser from State Farm comes over).

When they covered everything it was dark so I didn't get a good look at it but now I noticed that there is no sign of anything that could have held it down, they apparently just draped it. Back when I worked construction over a summer we used to place bricks or rocks on the tarps to keep the wind from blowing it off.

so maybe it will be a blessing. New furniture or cash for some stuff you didn't really want anyway.

The insurance company offered me a little over $500 for the repairs (after the deductible and depreciation). That doesn't cover any lost furniture etc.

Interestingly, the woman from the insurance company seemed to act like they would also pay for that. She wants me to take pictures of everything in the pile.
