you will have to buy "a new one"

Windows 7 is the next version of windows.

XP, then Vista, then Windows 7

On my first hard drive, I have Windows Vista and Gentoo Linux. On my second, I have all my personal files. On my third, older hard drive, I installed the Windows 7 beta. Since it's an older hard drive with only 8MB cache, it's not as fast as my first (32MB) or my second (16MB). Still, Windows 7 runs reasonably fast, though it gives me only a 2.9 score for my hard drive speed :-)

So far I've read most people complaining about the dock, but having seen the OSX dock, and having used a few docks in Linux (avant-window-navigator, cairo-dock, kiba-dock...), it is a very welcome addition for me. I especially like how each program/task is highly-visible, and they take up less space due to the ommission of text labels.

However, it is still obviously beta software. When I try to play Crysis, the game won't even load properly, and the program remains running no matter how many times I tell it to end the process in Task Mananger, and without regard to my rebooting the computer. Openoffice is a bit unstable, freezing occasionally, then working after a few seconds.

In order to install drivers for my motherboard and sound card, I needed to tell it to run the installation program in compatibility mode for Windows Vista, which is fine with me. It didn't include drivers for my wifi card, so in order to make internet access work, I needed to boot into Linux and save my wifi card's drivers on the Windows 7 partition.

Even in VirtualBox under Linux with the virtual machine set to use 512MB RAM, it runs rather well. Maybe this will apply to people who use VMWare: In Virtualbox, there is an iso image of tools available for download which includes drivers for various virtual hardware. Once you install it in the virtual machine, most things such as the virtual sound card and ethernet driver will work. (To avoid confusion, I installed a 32-bit version in a virtual machine and the 64-bit version on my actual hard drive.)

I prefer the CIFS/Samba in Linux sharing system, by which you set which people can access your files by folder, I.P. address, and username. This way, I can set only a certain folder to be shared only to a computer with a certain username, and only when a certain user is logged on. Sometimes I wish that Windows were as cleanly configurable as Samba is, just by editing a text file and entering a few values. Still, I don't mind the file sharing system that much, and password-protected sharing is definitely an improvement.

I wish Microsoft would rip off Expose. It's the most amazing thing about the OS X interface and I miss setting my lower right Hot Corner to it.

There's an application called "My Expose" which which duplicates some of the features, but only in Vista, and only if you have all of the "Aero" bells and whistles turned on.

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windo...windows-vista/

But yeah something like Expose and Spaces would be great to have on my windows workstation. People couldn't even accuse them of ripping spaces off of OSX since multiple desktop have been linux staple for a long time.

In other news, the new taskbar is an improvement!

ATI has a multiple desktop solution called Hydra that you can use if you have one of their video cards too.

I've got an nVidia card in my work computer, so that's no go. Fortunately, I have actual multiple desktops there as well, so it's not a big deal.

Well I was anticipating it, until I saw the 6 SKUs they were offering. It's like they didn't learn a thing.
