I don't like Buttigieg, but the idea that we should not elect a given leader because he would be offensive to Muslims should be a non-starter, and I hope that's obvious outside of this particular context.
(I don't mean that in an unlimited sense; I don't think we should elect someone who runs on a campaign of nuking Mecca, like the late Christian scholar Robert Morey publicly called for, but that's an obvious human rights violation in the first place.)Last edited by KingsGambit; 02-12-2020, 05:55 PM."I am not angered that the Moral Majority boys campaign against abortion. I am angry when the same men who say, "Save OUR children" bellow "Build more and bigger bombers." That's right! The point here is that Buttgieg would not be respected or feared by our enemies. He would be like Obama X10.

Obama was by far and away the most internationally-respected US President in my lifetime. That's just a fact. Poll after poll after poll backs it up. Here's just a few headlines from polling agencies that have conducted international polls on the subject:
President Obama Leaves Office with High Worldwide Approval Ratings
As Obama Years Draw to Close, President and U.S. Seen Favorably in Europe and Asia
Trump’s International Ratings Remain Low, Especially Among Key Allies
US conservatives seem to en masse be woefully blind to how their presidents are viewed internationally. Bush was viewed as a laughingstock. Obama was viewed as a particularly great leader. Trump is viewed as a laughingstock's laughingstock and a definite candidate for any list of history's most foolish and failed leaders. The fact that US conservatives don't seem to understand that that is what the rest of the world thinks, and in fact think it's the other way around, is kinda worrying and kinda hilarious.
So if Pete, as you suggest, is thought of 10x worse than Obama, he'll still be doing well, much better than Bush or Trump."I hate him passionately", he's "a demonic force" - Tucker Carlson, in private, on Donald Trump

Oh, and he was black, which appealed to progressive allies. They gave him a Peace Prize for doing nothing more than being black - and then he ended up fomenting lots of chaos in the Middle East (some peaceful guy).
