Christianity 201 Guidelines

orthodox Christians only.

Discussion on matters of general mainstream evangelical Christian theology that do not fit within Theology 201. Have some spiritual gifts ceased today? Is the KJV the only viable translation for the church today? In what sense are the books of the bible inspired and what are those books? Church government? Modern day prophets and apostles?

This forum is primarily for Christians to discuss matters of Christian doctrine, and is not the area for debate between atheists (or those opposing orthodox Christianity) and Christians. Inquiring atheists (or sincere seekers/doubters/unorthodox) seeking only Christian participation and having demonstrated a manner that does not seek to undermine the orthodox Christian faith of others are also welcome, but must seek Moderator permission first. When defining “Christian” or "orthodox" for purposes of this section, we mean persons holding to the core essentials of the historic Christian faith such as the Trinity, the Creatorship of God, the virgin birth, the bodily resurrection of Christ, the atonement, the future bodily return of Christ, the future bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, and the final judgment. Persons not holding to these core doctrines are welcome to participate in the Comparative Religions section without restriction, in Theology 201 as regards to the nature of God and salvation with limited restrictions, and in Christology for issues surrounding the person of Christ and the Trinity. Atheists are welcome to discuss and debate these issues in the Apologetics 301 forum without such restrictions.

Additionally and rarely, there may be some topics or lines of discussion that within the Moderator's discretion fall so outside the bounds of mainstream orthodox doctrine (in general Christian circles or in the TheologyWeb community) or that deny certain core values that are the Christian convictions of forum leadership that may be more appropriately placed within Unorthodox Theology 201. NO personal offense should be taken by such discretionary decision for none is intended. While inerrancy is NOT considered a requirement for posting in this section, a general respect for the Bible text and a respect for the inerrantist position of others is requested.

The Tweb rules apply here like they do everywhere at Tweb, if you haven't read them, now would be a good time.

You are making it too complicated. Having our sins forgiven is wonderful, but we still need character development to become good people. And of course we want to someday be made perfect. Oh, and being saved is easy, but being a good disciple is hard. Being a good disciple is what might get rewarded in Heaven.
If it weren't for the Resurrection of Jesus, we'd all be in DEEP TROUBLE!

Where do you see me saying I might get it? My last phrase is an allusion to James 2; I don't assume I can profess faith and then do whatever I feel like, but need to actively live my faith. Does Paul say it's copacetic to lay down on the track and take a nap, or to run the race in order to win the prize?
Enter the Church and wash away your sins. For here there is a hospital and not a court of law. Do not be ashamed to enter the Church; be ashamed when you sin, but not when you repent. – St. John Chrysostom

            easy piggy.

You said you had to work at being saved, that it was a process. I just wanted to know how you could know when you were far enough along to go to heaven when you die, or is it "as long as you keep working at it you will get to heaven"?

Not stressing, pirate - just not sure where you got the idea.

Eh, work at living out my faith, not at being saved. My works don't save me; they're just evidence I'm on the right path.

The latter. It's not like the repentant thief crucified with Christ had much chance to progress very far.

OK. That was what I was trying to clear up.

Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,

Yes, work it out in your every day life. You have to have salvation before you can work it out in you life's walk.
Micah 6:8 He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

I wouldn't say that. If we already had it, and nothing, neither blasphemy, carnal sin or abandoment of the mission could ever lose us our salvation, why the need to work it out with fear and trembling? Fear implies the coming of the terrible judge, and us having something to fear. If your salvation is possessed, certain, knowable and indestructible, then have no fear, sin, or not, you'll get to Heaven either way right?

The idea that we can't fall away from true faith never sat well with me. It always seemed an excuse of the most lukewarm milquetoast worldly Christians (of which I am certain you are NOT one of). It seems obvious to me that this happens all the time, even to Christian peers we respected. It seems we have to make an... effort, choice, will... decision (not sure what to call it), enabled, fuelled and made possible with God's Grace, to stay Christian. Not just in belief, but also in act and in spirit.

Like OneBadPig, I expect to be saved if I stay the course, which I can only do if I receive God's grace which I have to ask for every day.

God have mercy on me a sinner.

Leonhard, you are allowed to disagree with my understanding, but I still see it the same way.

I disagree with your evaluation of the idea of the security of salvation as well. I make an effort, with trepidation, because of my desire to please Him, not to avoid falling away. He has assured me that nothing can make me fall away.
Micah 6:8 He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
