“TWO MILLION Walmart employees” are still entitled to say “Merry Christmas” outside of working hours and most probably did. So, in fact, people in general did not stop saying “merry Christmas”, which was my point.

OK. I'm not sure if I am the only one - but I find this entire dispute childish in the extreme. Some people stopped saying Merry Christmas - some people didn't. The two of you (Tassman and CP) need to seriously get over yourselves. Who the HELL cares? We have people in the world dying of starvation, AIDS, and physical violence. We have children who need someone to help them learn how to read - and parents who have no way of knowing if they will be able to provide their child's next meal. Somewhere in the world, a 9-year-old is being handed a gun and told he has to kill people or face death himself. Somewhere in the world a 9-year-old is being told she has to be a child prostitute, or face death. Somewhere, a teenager is dying from a drug overdose, and somewhere else a woman is being raped by her supposed boyfriend. In the time it took me to write this - 2 people died in the U.S. on the business end of a gun - and 5 more were injured. Two people died of an overdose - and one woman was raped.

And the two of you think you are contributing to society by bickering over who said what about "Merry Christmas?"

IMO, both of you need to spend a little time thinking about what is and is not important.

The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy...returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Martin Luther King

I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong. Frederick Douglas

I agree, but that's a very leftist perspective you've got there. The conservatives in the US and their news media think the 'war on Christmas' is an important issue, and much more worth talking about than all the other problems in the world that left-wingers would much rather focus on.

The war on christmas nonsense is a conservative pretend issue as the O.P. Trump keeps promise, makes clear. So it isn't Tass or progressive/liberals in general that are bickering over a phoney issue, they're simply trying to explain to the dingbats that it is a phoney issue, that they're being played by conservative media and unethical politicians like Trump who are busy picking their constituents pockets while they direct their attention elsewhere.

Yeah, and stopping talking about an issue is going to solve all those problems.

              REALLY?

I couldn’t agree more that it’s not important. But the so-called “war on Christmas” is not a product of the left. It part of the erroneous evangelical claim of Christian persecution. Trump is fuelling this in order to maintain support from his evangelical base...as is evident from his nonsensical tweet that people are 'saying Merry Christmas again,' thanks to him. It’s what he does. He's a liar.

He has become something of a hero in conservative Christian circles.

I have to admit to some head-scratching over this one. First, it is odd to me that using a phrase that intends to include all religions is somehow an "attack." Second, this campaign is being waged by a man with almost NO history of religious involvement before 2016 - and suddenly he's the champion of Christianity? This from the man who has explicitly said that lying is OK if it achieves a desired end? Am I the only one who smells an opportunist here?
He held a speech about using "Merry Christmas" even though, doing that is in no way illegal or against the law and all the presidents before him also said "Merry Christmas?"

Sorry I just don't see what the big hubub is.

Any conservatives here who wants to explain? Why is this a huge victory?

Nevertheless, it’s viewed as an attack against the ‘one true religion’ by evangelicals.

Trump is cynically giving the evangelicals what they want; it seems they are prepared to overlook his less desirable qualities because of this. The ends justify the means apparently.

It was PEOPLE in those businesses who made the decision to tell other PEOPLE in those businesses that "Merry Christmas" was something to avoid. Just like the PEOPLE who run Texas A&M instructed their PEOPLE to stop using "Christmas" on any official correspondence, posters, advertising, greeting cards, etc.

So, the notion that “people have never stopped saying “merry Christmas” in the US" (I had to add the close quote you forgot, but that's free in the spirit of Christmas) is bunk. The fact is that there was this PC wave of "gee, we better not say Merry Christmas, or we might offend somebody".

(It amazes me how liberals can't seem to grasp the concept that 'businesses' are made up of PEOPLE)
Yep. If my company loses money due to more taxes, that means I don't get a bonus or a raise next year, and might not have a job. Liberals won't be happy until everyone is poor and on the Government dole. But then who is going to fund the dole?
