I'm not a complete neanderthal, I kind of get Jackson Pollock or Picasso, but this - really?

Banana duct-taped to wall fetches $120,000 at art show — and another is expected to sell for $150,000

Don't ask me. This "provocation" art stuff was interesting when it began, but it is so utterly devoid of substance.

I can't explain why, but I also like Pollock's stuff. But this does nothing for me. What the actual difference is, I don't think I could explain.

But I could tape a banana to a canvas - will some one pay me $120,000?

That's because Pollock was a real artist who spent years laboring over and perfecting his craft. He didn't just randomly fling paint at the canvas but knew that if he held the brush a certain way, and moved it just so, that it would create a predictable pattern.

The only question I have about modern "art" is... how can I get in on that racket? I'd love to be able to get $120,000 for spending 10-seconds duct taping a banana to a wall.

You know, I think that's how most modern art gets made.

I hope this "art" comes with replaceable bananas.

Back when Bush the elder was president I was dating a girl who opened up an art gallery in the Little Five Points region of Atlanta. During the grand opening a friend and I were looking at a particular piece that consisted of a white canvas with a large blue paper rectangle in the upper left corner. Upon this were several rows of caps from coca-cola bottles. The rest of the canvas had vertical red ribbons going across it. They were an inch or so above the canvas held there by what looked like toothpicks at the ends.

It was a "facsimile" of an American flag with elevated red stripes and coke bottle caps instead of stars.

I had just leaned over toward my friend and told him that I could make that it my garage in about 5 maybe 10 minutes (to which he nodded in the affirmative) when my girlfriend walked up behind us and said "Like it? I'm having the artist make me one."

Did I say she was gorgeous? I mean stunning. She was the sort that when she entered a room all heads turned.

Well, all I could say is "Yeah, it's different."

Fortunately the grand opening was packed and she had to keep circulating so I didn't have to go any further.

I'm always still in trouble again

My lady friend is a good landscape artist, so I have been to a lot of high end showings - I have embarrassed her more than once. One time eating pretty much all the shrimp at the free shrimp table.

                      We are indeed brudders.

This was the same art gallery grand opening where, because it got so packed and hence hot and stuffy, that I ended up stepping outside to get some cool air and ended up getting into a conversation on the street corner with a CPA in a three piece suit, a Hell's Angels biker (wearing his "colors") and a guy in a tie dyed robe so often associated with hippies. The one part I'll never forget is when Ronald Reagan was mentioned and Mr. tie-dye was utterly shocked to discover that he had been president for two terms or 8 years (he referred to him as the "Death Valley dude").
