Depends on the fish. Tetras, goldfish, or Cory cats are not known for being very smart. Oscars and many of the semi aggressive species are more noted for having personality. They do recognize their owners and some are even known to let their owners touch them without reacting.

        Or breakfast.
The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

My aunt & uncle just got a new dog after losing one in late December (hit by a car, though she was getting pretty old) and the other just before Memorial Day (cancer). They were given a 3-year old Viszla - he's maybe 2/3 the size of the one they just lost, and much less an alpha male - a few days ago. My aunt had just paid a down payment on a puppy, but wisely canceled that after getting the other dog.

Can't handle something 1/10th your size, eh?

I am really hoping to find another rescue. While I like puppies, it will be a LOT of work. Much rather have an adult dog who is already housebroken and crate trained.

Jake peed on the carpet ONE time the first time he came into our home, but I think he was nervous, and I told him we don't pee on carpets, and he said "OK", and has never done it again.

My brother's youngest dog Wendy did that when he picked her up from the pound. She was obviously very nervous. The problem was that he brought her over to my place to show her to me on the way home so it was my carpet she peed on.

My friend Jim (not THAT one!) had a dog once that would pee anytime she got excited, like if you petted her. I used to call her Puddles.

Yeah, I was very proud of that strategery.
