European no-go zones ruled by sharia law have been around for at least a decade and are common knowledge to anybody even moderately well-informed... which is why Merkel's open confession will be such a shock to low-info liberals. Some may call me foolish, and some may call me odd

There was a discussion about no-go zones recently. It was actually both interesting and funny:

There was an interesting Reddit thread awhile back asking Europeans if they were real. About half the respondents said yes and half said no. Obviously online you have no way of knowing who really is even from Europe though."I am not angered that the Moral Majority boys campaign against abortion. I am angry when the same men who say, "Save OUR children" bellow "Build more and bigger bombers." That's right! Blast the children in other nations into eternity, or limbless misery as they lay crippled from "OUR" bombers! This does not jell." - Leonard Ravenhill

Seems a bit weird that a right-wing pro-high-immigration politician like Merkel would want to talk about immigrant-heavy 'no-go' zones. Looking at her comments, given as part of her talking about cracking down on crime, it seems she is talking about high crime areas as opposed to immigrant-heavy areas so the comments may have zero connection to immigration in her mind. Crime-heavy zones is quite a different thing to what posters in this forum normally mean by '[Muslim immigrant heavy / sharia] no-go zones'. Her own government is refusing to give any specific examples, so that's both fishy and unhelpful.
But it seems like this might be the equivalent of Trump talking about Chicago as a high-crime hellhole that needs to be cracked down on with zero-tolerance policies. Probably nothing to do with sharia law or Islam.
In the interests of general clarity, can someone provide me with a clear definition of a 'no-go zone' and how one would set about measuring whether an area qualified as a 'no-go zone' or not? Can I also have an explanation of how an area that was high on Muslim immigrants who practiced 'sharia law' (whatever that is interpreted as meaning) would mean it would be a 'no-go zone'? Could I as a random white person not walk through such an area? What would happen to me if I did? What would happen to a police officer who entered such an area?Last edited by Starlight; 03-03-2018, 04:37 PM."I hate him passionately", he's "a demonic force" - Tucker Carlson, in private, on Donald Trump

Originally posted by Starlight View PostNo, you nutters are amusingly getting your hopes up because you think that a tiny piece of translation of interview comments about getting tough on crime (a standard right-wing trope, unsurprising given she's right-wing), somehow implies that she's done a complete 180 on her strong commitments to a policy of high immigration and now buys into your ignorant and hysterical fantasies with regard to Muslim immigration, when that wasn't what she was talking about.
Even in December 2016 she was already changing her tune...
Angela Merkel laid out her case for a fourth term as German chancellor on Tuesday, seeking to energize her conservatives with a call to ban full-face Muslim veils and the promise of a tougher stance on immigration after a record influx of refugees.
Speaking to a party congress of her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Essen, the western rust belt city where she won the party leadership 16 years ago, Merkel sought to present herself as a guarantor of stability in an uncertain world.
----------
Merkel's decision to allow the migrant influx last year hit her popularity, triggered a damaging fight with her Bavarian allies and led to a surge in support for the anti-immigrant, eurosceptic Alternative for Germany (AfD). The party is expected to win its first seats in the federal parliament next year.
In a nod to these troubles, Merkel began her speech with a promise not to allow a repetition of last year's migrant influx, when nearly 900,000 migrants poured into Germany, and drew cheers when she said the Muslim full-face veil was not compatible with German culture.
"Here we say 'show your face'. So full veiling is not appropriate here. It should be prohibited wherever legally possible," she said in a speech that lasted an hour and a quarter and was followed by 11 minutes of applause.

Doesn't sound at all like a "strong commitment to a policy of high immigration", does it?
You're almost as ignorant about things German as you are things US.The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

It's temporary political strategy because she's trying to negotiate a coalition deal with an anti-immigrant party so she's trying to offer a bit of a compromise, and her own super-high-immigration policies haven't been wildly popular.Last edited by Terraceth; 03-03-2018, 11:04 PM.
