From a Christian perspective, there are some figures who are looked back on in the Old Testament who are examples of true faith like David, and we know David did his share of horrible things. On the other hand, he repented. The leaders who were slave owners, for the most part, never saw a problem with what they did so their legacy is different. I wouldn't say different in the sense that it undoes all the good they ever did but it is a mixed legacy to be sure.

They are already working on it. MM has not added anything to their repertoire.
Micah 6:8 He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

David knowingly did wrong things tho, and not trivial things either. He murdered a man to have sex with his wife. The bible can reasonably be interpreted to permit slavery so it's likely that many slaveowners had no problem with it.

Also, it's impossible to find historical figures who are completely innocent. Do you think native american symbolism should also be removed from the public square in light of the fact that they also owned slaves and waged war on the united states like the confederacy did?
"As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths." Isaiah 3:12

There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.

They're not intending to erase history. They think that the statues and other commemorations they're removing celebrate people whose flaws outweigh their good, so they should no longer be celebrated.

I know. It dovetails nicely with the belief I've stated elsewhere that I believe statues are inherently idolatrous anyway.

I think statues celebrating confederate figures should be moved out of public urban spaces and into museums. It is offensive to both blacks and American patriots to be publicly celebrating people who fought a war against America to maintain the practice of slavery. Having statues of such people in public urban spaces is inappropriate, and historical museums are the correct place for such statues where people can go to learn about the history.

The Stone Mountain is a case where nothing needs to be done IMO - it is already in an out-of-the-way location (people are not being forced to walk past it daily like they are with a monument in a public square) and is essentially a 'museum' already.

Rahab was a prostitute, yet the book of Hebrews honors her as one of the great examples of faith alongside Noah, Abraham, and Moses!
