Trump to start process of sending Americans back to moon - White House

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday will sign a directive aimed at sending Americans back to the moon and eventually to Mars, the White House said.

Trump will sign "Space Policy Directive 1" that orders NASA "to lead an innovative space exploration program to send American astronauts back to the Moon, and eventually Mars," spokesman Hogan Gidley said.

Gidley said Trump's move is based on recommendations from the National Space Council.

"He will change our nation's human spaceflight policy to help America become the driving force for the space industry, gain new knowledge from the cosmos, and spur incredible technology," Gidley said in a statement.
The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

Any truth to the rumor that Hillary was the first to "volunteer"?

I'm always still in trouble again

We should put him, his family, and his administration, on the first one way trip there. You could go to CP.

I think they should just take all the money they think they will spend on this and offer it as a prize for the first private company to land men on Mars and return them. NASA has a bad habit of spending a ton of money then abandoning their accomplishments.

I'm inclined to agree - and keep the "rewarding my supporters" crap and no bid contracts out of this.

Why would we go back to the moon? Seems like a lot of money spent to go stand on a rock. Again.

This is after pushing tax cuts for himself and his rich GOP donors which will push the national debt well over 1 trillion dollars. How's he going to pay for these NASA missions?

I guess the thinking is that in the long run, a moonbase is a better place to launch rockets from than earth because of the lower gravity. but they would need to find a way to do mining and manufacturing on the moon first. Plus it gives them a goal that they can accomplish and use as a PR stunt to rev up the American people and get more money for the trip to Mars.

Politics aside, do you agree with the push to go back to the moon?

Using lunar orbit as a staging point for Mars flights - yes. Landing men on the surface - no. Unmanned vehicles can do that job much better and cheaper than putting humans back there.

You think we can launch "equipment" to the moon without people, and that equipment can set up and launch missions to Mars?

It is much easier to fake the Mars landing from the moon. Just need some red paint.

If you're going to use orbit as a staging point, wouldn't it be simpler to just use Earth orbit?

I think it would be more cost-effective for a private venture to get us back into space (which is already starting to happen, at least for LEO). We need to commercialize space in order to make it economically viable anyway, IMO.
