This is a non-debate thread.

Throughout the thread, entries in the 4th section (Analysis) will consist of excerpts from A Grammatical Analysis of the Greek New Testament, by Max Zerwick and Mary Grosvenor (Rome: Biblical Institute Press, 1981).

Occasionally, the Analysis may include, in brackets, an entry headed 'BG': all such entries will consist of quotations from Biblical Greek: Illustrated by Examples, by Maximilian Zerwick S.J., English edition adapted from the fourth Latin edition by Joseph Smith S.J. (Scripta Pontificii Instituti Biblici: Rome, 1963).

Prompted by a post by Jaltus in the Eschatology forum, I'll be reading Grant Osborne's Revelation (Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament) for my own edification, but I do not intend to post any commentary in this thread.

John, is there anything significant in the fact that "alpha" is spelled out but "o[mega]" isn't? Are there some manuscripts that spell both out, or neither?

Translation (ESV):
The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire, his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength.

Transliteration:
Kaì hóte eĩdon autón, épesa pròs toùs pódas autoũ hōs nekrós, kaì éthēken tēn dexiàn autoũ epʼ emè légōn: mē phoboũ; egō eimi ho prōtos kaì ho éschatos kaì ho zōn, kaì egenómēn nekròs kaì idoù zōn eimi eis toùs aiōnas tōn aiōnōn kai échō tàs kleĩs toũ thanátou kaì toũ ha̧dou.

When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, "Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.
Analysis (Zerwick):
ἔπεσα : aorist of πίπτω : I fell.

ἔθηκεν : aorist of τίθημι : he laid.
φοβοῦ : imperative of φοβέομαι : fear (not).

NA27 Text (Revelation 1:20):
Transliteration:
to mustērion tōn heptà astérōn hous eĩdes epì tēs dexiãs mou kai tas heptà luchnías tas chrusãs; hoi heptà astéres ággeloi tōn heptà ekklēsiōn eisin kai hai luchníai hai heptà heptà ekklēsíai eisín.
Translation (ESV):
As for the mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand, and the seven golden lampstands, the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.
Analysis (Zerwick):
μυστήριον : mystery, hidden meaning ; accusative of respect, with regard to / as to the secret.
ἀστήρ, έρος, ὁ : star.
λυχνία : lampstand.
χρυσοῦς (genitive - χρυσοῦ) -σῆ, -οῦν : made of gold.
λυχνία, χρυσοῦς : accusative instead of genitive (after μυστήριον) under influence of εἶδες.
ἄγγελος : explained in different ways, all of which from "guardian angels" to "messengers from the churches" are beset by difficulties. Probably the angels stand as symbols of the spirit and outlook characterizing each community.
