Καὶ ὁ νικῶν καὶ ὁ τηρῶν ἄχρι τέλους τὰ ἔργα μου, δώσω αὐτῷ ἐξουσίαν ἐπὶ τῶν ἐθνῶν καὶ ποιμανεῖ αὐτοὺς ἐν ῥάβδῳ σιδηρᾷ ὡς τὰ σκεύη τὰ κεραμικὰ συντρίβεται, ὡς κἀγὼ εἴληφα παρὰ τοῦ πατρός μου, καὶ δώσω αὐτῷ τὸν ἀστέρα τὸν πρωϊνόν.
Transliteration:
Kai ho nikōn kai ho tērōn áchri télous ta érga mou, dōsō autō̧ exousían epì tōn ethnōn kai poimaneĩ autoùs en rhábdō̧ sidēra̧ hōs ta skeúē ta keramikà suntríbetai, ōs kagō eílēpha parà tou patrós mou, kai dōsō autō̧ ton astéra ton prōïnón.
Translation (REB):
To him who is victorious, to him who perseveres in doing my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations — that same authority which I received from my Father — and he will rule them with a rod of iron, smashing them to pieces like earthenware; and I will give him the star of dawn.
Analysis (Zerwick & BDAG — meanings in this context):
ὁ νικῶν : pendent nominative [BG: The pendent nominative ... consists in the enunciation of the logical (not grammatical) subject at the beginning of the sentence, followed by a sentence in which the subject is taken up by a pronoun in the case required by the syntax ... ¶25] : νικῶν = participle of νικάω : ὁ νικῶν one who wins in the face of obstacles, is victor.
τηρῶν : participle of τηρέω : ὁ τηρῶν one who causes a state, condition, or activity to continue, perseveres.
ἄχρι : marker of continuous extent of time up to a point, until.
τέλος : a point of time marking the end of a duration, the end.
ἔργα : plural of ἔργον that which displays itself in activity of any kind, deed, action.
ποιμανεῖ : future of ποιμαίνω mind a flock, hence rule.
ἐν : instrumental with.
ῥάβδος : rod.
σιδηροῦς : of iron.
σκεῦος : vessel, jar, dish, pot.
κεραμικός : of clay.
συντρίβεται : passive of συντρίβω, present for future : smash.
κἀγὼ = καὶ ἐγώ and I.
εἴληφα : perfect of λαμβάνω : I received.
ἀστήρ : star.
πρωϊνός : early ; ὁ ἀστήρ ὁ πρωϊνός the morning star (Venus), symbol of Christ 22:16.

Analysis (Zerwick):
οὖς : ear.
ἀκουσάτω : aorist imperative of ἀκούω : let him hear.
τί : as indirect interrogative : what.

Καὶ τῷ ἀγγέλῳ τῆς ἐν Σάρδεσιν ἐκκλησίας γράψον· Τάδε λέγει ὁ ἔχων τὰ ἑπτὰ πνεύματα τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ τοὺς ἑπτὰ ἀστέρας· οἶδά σου τὰ ἔργα ὅτι ὄνομα ἔχεις ὅτι ζῇς, καὶ νεκρὸς εἶ.
Transliteration:
Kai tō̧ aggélō̧ tēs en Sárdesin ekklēsías grápson; Táde légei ho échōn ta heptà pneúmata tou theoũ kai tous heptà astéras; oĩdá sou ta érga hóti ónoma écheis hóti zȩ̄s, kai nekròs ei.
Translation (ESV):
"And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: 'The words of him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. "'I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead.
Analysis (Zerwick):
ἄγγελος : explained in different ways, all of which from "guardian angels" to "messengers from the churches" are beset by difficulties. Probably the angels stand as symbols of the spirit and outlook characterizing each community.
γράψον : aorist imperative of γράφω : write.
τάδε : these things (classical referring to what follows) opposite ταῦτα (classical referring to what precedes).
ἀστήρ : star.
ὄνομα ἔχεις ὅτι... : you have the name of....
ζῇς : 2nd person singular of ζάω : you are alive.

Transliteration:
gínou grēgorōn kaì stērison ta loipà ha émellon apothaneĩn, ou gar heúrēka sou ta érga peplērōména enōpion tou theoũ mou.
Translation (ESV):
Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God.
Analysis (Zerwick):
γίνου : imperative of γίνομαι : become.
γρηγορῶν : participle of γρηγορέω be watchful, alert ; γίνου γρηγορῶν : periphrastic (Aramaic) to express continual watchfulness.
στήρισον : aorist imperative of στηρίζω : strengthen.
λοιπός : (< λείπω leave) left, τὰ λοιπὰ what remains (understand: of your Christian life).
ἔμελλον : imperfect of μέλλω : with infinitive = to be about to.
ἀποθανεῖν : aorist infinitive of ἀποθνῄσκω : to die.
εὕρηκά : perfect of εὑρίσκω ; οὐ γὰρ εὕρηκά for I have not found.
σου τὰ ἔργα : your works
πεπληρωμένα : perfect passive participle : fulfilled, complete.

μνημόνευε οὖν πῶς εἴληφας καὶ ἤκουσας καὶ τήρει καὶ μετανόησον. ἐὰν οὖν μὴ γρηγορήσῃς, ἥξω ὡς κλέπτης, καὶ οὐ μὴ γνῷς ποίαν ὥραν ἥξω ἐπὶ σέ.
Transliteration:
mnēmóneue oun pōs eílēphas kaì ēkousas kaì tērei kaì metanóēson. eàn oun mē grēgorēsȩ̄s, hēxō hōs kléptēs, kaì ou mē gnō̧s poían hōran hēxō epì sé.
Translation (ESV):
Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you.
Analysis (Zerwick):
μνημόνευε : imperative of μνημονεύω remember.
πῶς : as indirect interrogative : what.
εἴληφας : perfect of λαμβάνω, perfect meaning you have received (and still hold), but the form (augment substituted for reduplication) lends itself to treatment as if aorist, cf 5:7, 8:5.
ἤκουσας : aorist of ἀκούω : you have heard.
τήρει : imperative of τηρέω (keep), understanding as object "it" (i.e. what you still hold).
μετανόησον : aorist imperative of μετανοέω : repent.
γρηγορήσῃς : aorist subjunctive of γρηγορέω : stay alert.
ἥξω : I shall come.
κλέπτης : thief.
οὐ μὴ : with subjunctive emphatic negative referencing future.
γνῷς : aorist subjunctive of γινώσκω : you will [not / οὐ μὴ] know.
ποῖος; : what kind? also as indirect interrogative what ; accusative may denote a point in time Jn 4:52,. Ac 10:3.

Transliteration:
allà écheis olíga onómata en Sárdesin ha ouk emólunan ta himátia autōn, kai peripatēsousin met’ emoũ en leukoís, hóti áxioí eisin.
Translation (ESV):
Yet you have still a few names in Sardis, people who have not soiled their garments, and they will walk with me in white, for they are worthy.
Analysis (Zerwick):
ὀλίγος : small, plural a few.
ὀνόματα : ['names'] (Hebraism) persons, people, Acts 1:15.
ἐμόλυναν : aorist of μολύνω : they defiled.
ἱμάτιον : (outer) garment.
περιπατήσουσιν : future of περιπατέω : they will walk.
λευκός : white.
ἄξιος : worthy.

Transliteration:

The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels.

νικῶν : participle of νικάω ; the one who is victorious.
περιβαλεῖται : future middle of περιβάλλω : here with ἐν translate shall be clothed in.
ἐξαλείψω : aorist subjunctive of ἐξαλείφω : I will [never οὐ μὴ] wipe out.
βίβλος : roll, book.
ὁμολογήσω : future of ὁμολογέω : I will acknowledge.

And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: 'The words of the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens.
Analysis (Zerwick):
γράψον : aorist imperative of γράφω : write.
τάδε : these things (classical referring to what follows) opposite ταῦτα (classical referring to what precedes).
ἀληθινός : true, genuine ; Hebraism true to one's promise.
κλείς : key : to hold the key implying all authority.
Δαυίδ : indeclinable, here genitive : of David.
ἀνοίγων : participle of ἀνοίγω : ὁ ἀνοίγων the one who opens.
κλείσει : future of κλείω shut ; in ὁ ἀνοίγων καὶ οὐδεὶς κλείσει, the καί is consecutive so that.

οἶδά σου τὰ ἔργα, ἰδοὺ δέδωκα ἐνώπιόν σου θύραν ἠνεῳγμένην, ἣν οὐδεὶς δύναται κλεῖσαι αὐτήν, ὅτι μικρὰν ἔχεις δύναμιν καὶ ἐτήρησάς μου τὸν λόγον καὶ οὐκ ἠρνήσω τὸ ὄνομά μου.
Transliteration:
oĩdá sou ta érga, idoù dédōka enōpión sou thúran ēneō̧gménēn, hēn oudeìs dúnatai kleĩsai autēn, hóti mikràn écheis dúnamin kai etērēsás mou ton lógon kai ouk ērnēsō to ónomá mou.
Translation (ESV):
I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.
Analysis (Zerwick):
δέδωκα : perfect of δίδωμι in Hebraic sense of set : I have set.
θύρα : door = an opening to spread the gospel, 1 Cor. 16:9.
ἠνεῳγμένην : perfect passive participle (with triple augment) of ἀνοίγω : open.
κλεῖσαι : aorist infinitive of κλείω : to shut.
αὐτήν : redundant after ἣν : Semitism [BG: The use of a pronoun repeating the relative ... is very frequent in Semitic languages, where it is often necessary to the sense ... ¶201].
μικρός : little.
καί : (1st time) and yet.
ἐτήρησάς : aorist of τηρέω : you have kept.
ἠρνήσω : aorist of ἀρνέομαι : you have (not οὐκ) denied.

ἰδοὺ διδῶ ἐκ τῆς συναγωγῆς τοῦ σατανᾶ τῶν λεγόντων ἑαυτοὺς Ἰουδαίους εἶναι, καὶ οὐκ εἰσὶν ἀλλὰ ψεύδονται. ἰδοὺ ποιήσω αὐτοὺς ἵνα ἥξουσιν καὶ προσκυνήσουσιν ἐνώπιον τῶν ποδῶν σου καὶ γνῶσιν ὅτι ἐγὼ ἠγάπησά σε.
Transliteration:
idoù didō ek tēs synagōgēs tou satanã tōn legóntōn heautoùs Ioudaíous eĩnai, kai ouk eisìn allà pseúdontai. idoù poiēsō autoùs hína hēxousin kai proskunēsousin enōpion tōn podōn sou kai gnōsin hóti egō ēgápēsá se.
Translation (ESV):
Behold, I will make those of the synagogue of Satan who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie—behold, I will make them come and bow down before your feet and they will learn that I have loved you.
Analysis (Zerwick):
διδῶ : by-form of δίδωμι ; ἰδοὺ διδῶ literal Hebraic construction "behold me granting, that...", i.e. I will bring it about that...
ἐκ τῆς συναγωγῆς : understand τινες before ἐκ (some of those) from the synagogue.
τῶν λεγόντων ... καὶ οὐκ εἰσὶν : participial construction lapsing into indicative with καί coordinate.
ψεύδομαι : utter an untruth, lie.
ποιήσω : future of ποιέω : I will make.
ποιήσω αὐτοὺς ἵνα ἥξουσιν : consecutive I will make them come, with future (instead of subjunctive) following ἵνα ; proleptic pronoun Hebraism.
ἥξουσιν : future of ἥκω : they will come.
προσκυνήσουσιν : future of προσκυνέω τινι (or sometimes, e.g. 9:20, 13:8) τινα prostrate oneself before, go down on one's knees to, worship one.
γνῶσιν : aorist subjunctive of γινώσκω ; dependent on ἵνα.
ἠγάπησα : aorist of ἀγαπάω, possibly the aorist represents a Hebraic perfect which in verbs denotes a state — may = present Mk 1:11. (εὐδόκησα).

ὅτι ἐτήρησας τὸν λόγον τῆς ὑπομονῆς μου, κἀγώ σε τηρήσω ἐκ τῆς ὥρας τοῦ πειρασμοῦ τῆς μελλούσης ἔρχεσθαι ἐπὶ τῆς οἰκουμένης ὅλης πειράσαι τοὺς κατοικοῦντας ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς.
Transliteration:
hóti etērēsas ton lógon tēs hupomonēs mou, kagō se tērēsō ek tēs hōras tou peirasmoũ tēs melloúsēs érchesthai epì tēs oikouménēs hólēs peirásai tous katoikoũntas epì tēs gēs.
Translation (ESV):
Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try those who dwell on the earth.
Analysis (Zerwick):
ὑπομονή : constancy, τὸν λόγον τῆς ὑπομονῆς μου my call to constancy.
κἀγώ = καί ἐγώ.
τηρήσω : future of τηρέω : I will keep.
πειρασμός : trial.
μελλούσης : participle of μέλλω : τῆς μελλούσης ἔρχεσθαι that is coming.
οἰκουμένη : the inhabited world.

ἔρχομαι ταχύ· κράτει ὃ ἔχεις, ἵνα μηδεὶς λάβῃ τὸν στέφανόν σου.
Transliteration:
érchomai tachú; krátei ho écheis, hína mēdeìs lábȩ̄ ton stéphanón sou.
Translation (ESV):
I am coming soon. Hold fast what you have, so that no one may seize your crown.
Analysis (Zerwick):
ἔρχομαι : present with future sense : I am coming.
ταχύ : neuter as adverb : soon.
κράτει : imperative of κρατέω : hold fast.
λάβῃ : aorist subjunctive of λάβῃ : take.
στέφανος : crown.

Ὁ νικῶν ποιήσω αὐτὸν στῦλον ἐν τῷ ναῷ τοῦ θεοῦ μου καὶ ἔξω οὐ μὴ ἐξέλθῃ ἔτι καὶ γράψω ἐπ᾿ αὐτὸν τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ θεοῦ μου καὶ τὸ ὄνομα τῆς πόλεως τοῦ θεοῦ μου, τῆς καινῆς Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἡ καταβαίνουσα ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἀπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ μου, καὶ τὸ ὄνομά μου τὸ καινόν.
Transliteration:
hO nikōn poiēsō autòn stũlon en tō̧ naō̧ tou theoũ mou kai éxō ou mē exélthȩ̄ éti kai grápsō ep’ autòn to ónoma tou theoũ mou kai to ónoma tēs póleōs tou theoũ mou, tēs kainēs Ierousalēm hē katabaínousa ek tou ouranoũ apò tou theoũ mou, kai to ónomá mou to kainón.
Translation (ESV):
The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name.
Analysis (Zerwick):
νικῶν : participle of νικάω conquer, be victorious : ὁ νικῶν = pendent nominative resumed by αὐτόν [BG: The pendent nominative [...] is a form of anacoluthon [that] consists in the enunciation of the logical (not grammatical) subject at the beginning of the sentence, followed by a sentence in which the subject is taken up by a pronoun in the case required by the syntax. ¶25].
ναός : temple.
ἔξω : out.
οὐ μὴ : with subjunctive = emphatic negative referring to the future.
ἐξέλθῃ : aorist subjunctive of ἐξέρχομαι go out.
ἔτι : with negative any more.
γράψω : future of γράφω write.
καινός : new.
καταβαίνουσα : participle of καταβαίνω come down : nominative in apposition to noun in the genitive : [BG: In vulgar usage there is a tendency to neglect concord, both for gender and for case, in words used in apposition, and especially in participles so used. ... Incongruities of this kind in appositions, especially with participles, occur with remarkable frequency in the least literary of the NT books, Revelation .... ¶13].

Transliteration:
hO échōn ous akousátō ti to pneũma légei tais ekklēsíais.
Translation (ESV):
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
Analysis (Zerwick):
οὖς : ear.
ἀκουσάτω : aorist imperative 3rd singular of ἀκούω : let him hear.
τί : as indirect interrogative : what.

Καὶ τῷ ἀγγέλῳ τῆς ἐν Λαοδικείᾳ ἐκκλησίας γράψον· Τάδε λέγει ὁ ἀμήν, ὁ μάρτυς ὁ πιστὸς καὶ ἀληθινός, ἡ ἀρχὴ τῆς κτίσεως τοῦ θεοῦ·
Transliteration:
Kai tō̧ aggélō̧ tēs en Laodikeía̧ ekklēsías grápson; Táde légei ho amēn, ho mártus ho pistòs kai alēthinós, hē archē tēs ktíseōs tou theoũ;
Translation (ESV):
And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: 'The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God’s creation'.
Analysis (Zerwick):
γράψον : aorist imperative of γράφω : write.
τάδε : these things (classical referring to what follows) opposite ταῦτα (classical referring to what precedes).
ὁ ἀμήν : the Amen, referring to Christ.
πιστός : faithful.
ἀληθινός : true.
