οἶδά σου τὰ ἔργα ὅτι οὔτε ψυχρὸς εἶ οὔτε ζεστός. ὄφελον ψυχρὸς ἦς ἢ ζεστός.
Transliteration:
oĩdá sou ta érga hóti oúte psuchròs ei oúte zestós. óphelon psuchròs ēs ē zestós.
Translation (ESV):
I know your works; you are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were either cold or hot.
Analysis (Zerwick):
οὔτε ... οὔτε : neither ... nor.
ψυχρός : cold.
ζεστός : (< ζέω boil) : hot.
ὄφελον : particle introducing a wish unlikely to be realized, would that! if only!
ἦς : imperfect 2nd singular of εἰμί : you were.

Transliteration:
hoútōs hóti chliaròs ei kai oute zestòs oúte psuchrós, méllō se emésai ek tou stómatós mou.
Translation (NRSV):
So, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
Analysis (Zerwick):
χλιαρός : tepid, lukewarm.
ἐμέσαι : aorist infinitive of ἐμέω vomit, be sick; μέλλω σε ἐμέσαι for future : I will spit you out....

Transliteration:

Translation (NRSV):
For you say, ‘I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing.’ You do not realize that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.
Analysis (Zerwick):
ὅτι : (2nd time) = "...
πλούσιος : rich.
πεπλούτηκα : perfect of πλουτέω : I am rich.
χρεία : need; οὐδὲν χρείαν ἔχω I lack nothing.
ταλαίπωρος : wretched; σὺ εἶ ὁ ταλαίπωρος it is you who are the wretched one.
ἐλεεινός : pitiable.
πτωχός : poor.
τυφλός : blind.
γυμνός : naked.

συμβουλεύω σοι ἀγοράσαι παρ᾿ ἐμοῦ χρυσίον πεπυρωμένον ἐκ πυρὸς ἵνα πλουτήσῃς, καὶ ἱμάτια λευκὰ ἵνα περιβάλῃ καὶ μὴ φανερωθῇ ἡ αἰσχύνη τῆς γυμνότητός σου, καὶ κολλ[ο]ύριον ἐγχρῖσαι τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς σου ἵνα βλέπῃς.
Transliteration:
sumbouleúō soi agorásai par’ emoũ chrusīon pepurōménon ek puròs hína ploutēsȩ̄s, kai himátia leukà hína peribálȩ̄ kai mē phanerōthȩ̄ hē aischúnē tēs gumnótētós sou, kai koll[o]úrion egchrĩsai tous ophthalmoús sou hína blépȩ̄s.
Translation (NRSV):
Therefore I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire so that you may be rich; and white robes to clothe you and to keep the shame of your nakedness from being seen; and salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see.

συμβουλεύω : I counsel, advise.
ἀγοράσαι : aorist infinitive of ἀγοράζω (< ἀγορά market) : to buy.

χρυσίον : (the metal) gold.
πεπυρωμένον : perfect passive participle of πυρόω : refined (by fire).

ἱμάτιον : (outer) garment.

ἐγὼ ὅσους ἐὰν φιλῶ ἐλέγχω καὶ παιδεύω· ζήλευε οὖν καὶ μετανόησον.
Transliteration:
egō hósous ean philō elégchō kai paideúō; zēleue oun kai metanóēson.
Translation (NRSV):
I reprove and discipline those whom I love. Be earnest, therefore, and repent.
Analysis (Zerwick):
ἐάν = ἄν = a particle peculiar to Greek (Hom.+) denoting aspect of contingency, incapable of translation by a single English word; it denotes that the action of the verb is dependent on some circumstance or condition.
φιλῶ : subjunctive of φιλέω I love.
ἐλέγχω : I reprove.
παιδεύω : I discipline.
ζήλευε : imperative of ζηλεύω : be zealous/eager.
μετανόησον : aorist imperative of μετανοέω : repent.

Ἰδοὺ ἕστηκα ἐπὶ τὴν θύραν καὶ κρούω· ἐάν τις ἀκούσῃ τῆς φωνῆς μου καὶ ἀνοίξῃ τὴν θύραν, [καὶ] εἰσελεύσομαι πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ δειπνήσω μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ καὶ αὐτὸς μετ᾿ ἐμοῦ.
Transliteration:
Idoù héstēka epì tēn thúran kai kroúō; ean tis akoúsȩ̄ tēs phōnēs mou kai anoíxȩ̄ tēn thúran, [kai] eiseleúsomai pros autòn kai deipnēsō metʼ autoũ kai autòs metʼ emoũ.
Translation (NRSV):
Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you, and you with me.
Analysis (Zerwick):
ἕστηκα : perfect (intransitive with present meaning) of ἵστημι : I am standing.
ἐπί : (with accusative) at.
θύρα : door.
κρούω : I am knocking.
ἀκούσῃ : 3rd singular aorist subjunctive of ἀκούω : [if anyone ἐάν τις] hears.
ἀνοίξῃ : aorist subjunctive of ἀνοίγω : opens.
εἰσελεύσομαι : future of εἰσέρχομαι : I will come in.
δειπνήσω : future of δειπνέω (δεῖπνον was the main meal, usually early in the evening) : I will dine.

Transliteration:
hO nikōn dōsō autō̧ kathísai metʼ emoũ en tō̧ thrónō̧ mou, hōs kagō eníkēsa kai ekáthisa metà tou patrós mou en tō̧ thrónō̧ autoũ.
Translation (NRSV):
To the one who conquers I will give a place with me on my throne, just as I myself conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.

νικῶν : participle of νικάω; pendent nominative : (to the one who) overcomes.

Μετὰ ταῦτα εἶδον, καὶ ἰδοὺ θύρα ἠνεῳγμένη ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ, καὶ ἡ φωνὴ ἡ πρώτη ἣν ἤκουσα ὡς σάλπιγγος λαλούσης μετ᾿ ἐμοῦ λέγων· ἀνάβα ὧδε, καὶ δείξω σοι ἃ δεῖ γενέσθαι μετὰ ταῦτα.
Transliteration:
Metà taũta eĩdon, kai idoù thúra ēneō̧gménē en tō̧ ouranō̧, kai hē phōnē hē prōtē hēn ēkousa hōs sálpiggos laloúsēs metʼ emoũ légōn; anába hōde, kai deíxō soi ha dei genésthai metà taũta.
Translation (REB):
After this I had a vision: a door stood open in heaven, and the voice that I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, ‘Come up here, and I will show you what must take place hereafter.”
Analysis (Zerwick):
εἶδον, καὶ ἰδοὺ : Hebrew meaning "I had a vision of..."
θύρα : door.
ἠνεῳγμένη : perfect passive participle (with triple augment) of ἀνοίγω : open.
φωνή : like θύρα dependent on ἰδού : voice.
πρώτη : for comparison, the voice of 1:10.
ἤκουσα : aorist of ἀκούω : I heard.
σάλπιγξ : trumpet.
λαλούσης : feminine participle of λαλέω : speaking.
λέγων : treated as if Hebraism (undeclinable).
ἀνάβα : come up! ; aorist imperative of ἀναβαίνω.

Εὐθέως ἐγενόμην ἐν πνεύματι, καὶ ἰδοὺ θρόνος ἔκειτο ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ, καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν θρόνον καθήμενος, καὶ ὁ καθήμενος ὅμοιος ὁράσει λίθῳ ἰάσπιδι καὶ σαρδίῳ, καὶ ἶρις κυκλόθεν τοῦ θρόνου ὅμοιος ὁράσει σμαραγδίνῳ.
Transliteration:
Euthéōs egenómēn en pneúmati, kai idoù thrónos ékeito en tō̧ ouranō̧, kai epì ton thrónon kathēmenos, kai ho kathēmenos hómoios horásei líthō̧ iáspidi kai sardíō̧, kai ĩris kuklóthen tou thrónou hómoios horásei smaragdinō̧.
Translation (REB):
Immediately I was in the Spirit, and a throne was standing in heaven with someone seated on it! And the one seated on it was like jasper and carnelian in appearance, and a rainbow looking like it was made of emerald encircled the throne.
Analysis (Zerwick):
ἐγενόμην : aorist of γίνομαι ; ἐγενόμην ἐν πνεύματι I was in the Spirit.
ἔκειτο : imperfect of κεῖμαι (used as perfect passive of τίθημι) be placed/set, hence lie, stand.
καθήμενος : participle of κάθημαι : one seated.
ὅμοιος : like.
ὅρασις : sight, dative of respect, in appearance.
λίθος : stone.
ἴασπις : jasper.
σάρδιον : cornelian.
ἶρις : rainbow.
κυκλόθεν : adverb (from) round about : as preposition with genitive around.
σμαράγδινος : emerald.

Transliteration:
Kai kuklóthen tou thrónou thrónous eíkosi téssares, kai epì tous thrónous eíkosi téssaras presbutérous kathēménous peribeblēménous en himatíois leukoĩs kai epì tas kephalàs autōn stephánous chrusoũs.
Translation (NRSV):
Around the throne are twenty-four thrones, and seated on the thrones are twenty-four elders, dressed in white robes, with golden crowns on their heads.
Analysis (Zerwick):
καί : supply εἶδον (aorist of ὁράω) : and I saw.
εἴκοσι τέσσαρες = 24.
περιβεβλημένους : perfect passive participle of περιβάλλω put on or around one ; perfect passive wear.
ἱμάτιον : (outer) garment.
λευκός : white.
στεφάνους : plural of στέφανος : crowns.
χρυσοῦς : of gold.

Translation (REB):
From the throne came flashes of lightning and peals of thunder. Burning before the throne were seven flaming torches, the seven spirits of God,
Analysis (Zerwick):
ἐκπορεύομαι : issue, go out.
ἀστραπή : lightning; plural flashes of lightning.
βροντή : thunder; plural peals of thunder, thunder claps.
λαμπάς : torch.
καιόμεναι : passive participle of καίω set on fire ; passive intransitive burn.

Transliteration:
kai enōpion tou thrónou hōs thálassa hualínē homoía krustállō̧. Kai en mésō̧ tou thrónou kai kúklō̧ tou thrónou téssara zō̧a gémonta ophthalmōn émprosthen kai ópisthen.
Translation (NJB):
In front of the throne was a sea as transparent as crystal. In the middle of the throne and around it, were four living creatures all studded with eyes, in front and behind.
Analysis (Zerwick):
ὑάλινος : of glass.
κρύσταλλος : crystal.
ἐν μέσῳ : in the middle.
κύκλῳ : as adverb, in a circle, round about.
τέσσαρες = 4.
ζῷον : living creature.
γέμοντα : participle of γέμω be full of (something).
ἔμπροσθεν : in front of
ὄπισθεν : behind.

Transliteration:
kai to zō̧on to prōton hómoion léonti kai to deúteron zō̧on hómoion móschō̧ kai to tríton zō̧on échōn to prósōpon hōs anthrōpou kai to tétarton zō̧on hómoion aetō̧ petoménō̧.
Translation (NRSV):
the first living creature like a lion, the second living creature like an ox, the third living creature with a face like a human face, and the fourth living creature like a flying eagle.
Analysis (Zerwick):
λέων : lion.
δεύτερος : second.
μόσχος : calf.
τρίτος : third.
τέταρτος : fourth.
ἀετός : eagle.

ἅγιος ἅγιος ἅγιος κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὁ παντοκράτωρ,
ὁ ἦν καὶ ὁ ὢν καὶ ὁ ἐρχόμενος.
Transliteration:

Translation (NRSV):
Each of the four living creatures had six wings, and eyes all round and inside them. Day and night unceasingly they sing:

ἓν καθ᾿ἓν : each (one).
ἀνά : distributive, each, apiece.
πτέρυξ : wing.
ἕξ + 6.
κυκλόθεν : adverb (from) round about : as preposition with genitive around.
ἔσωθεν : (from) within, inside.
ἀνάπαυσις : rest; ἀνάπαυσιν οὐκ ἔχουσιν ... λέγοντες they cry without ceasing.
ἡμέρας καὶ νυκτὸς : (by) day and (by) night, genitive of time within which.
ἅγιος : predicate, holy.
παντοκράτωρ : all-mighty, all sovereign.
ὁ ἦν καὶ ὁ ὢν καὶ ὁ ἐρχόμενος : he who was, and who is, and who is to come.

Καὶ ὅταν δώσουσιν τὰ ζῷα δόξαν καὶ τιμὴν καὶ εὐχαριστίαν τῷ καθημένῳ ἐπὶ τῷ θρόνῳ τῷ ζῶντι εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων,
Transliteration:
Kai hotan dōsousin ta zō̧a doxan kai timēn kai eucharistian tō̧ kathēmenō̧ epi tō̧ thronō̧ tō̧ zōnti eis tous aiōnas tōn aiōnōn,
Translation (NRSV):
And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to the one who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever,
Analysis (Zerwick):
δώσουσιν : future of δίδωμι, future for subjunctive after ὅταν; together with the 3 futures in verse 10, this future may represent a Hebrew imperfect (= present) whenever ... they give ... etc.
τιμή : honor.
εὐχαριστία : thanksgiving.
καθημενος : participle of κάθημαι : one seated.
ζῶντι : participle of ζαω : one seated.
εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων : for ever and ever.
