Yo all!

Since I will be banned from TWeb for a few days starting tomorrow, I wanted to go ahead and start the February thread now. Also, since we do have so many bright, new participants in the sport of Screwball Awarding recently, I thought this would be a good time to sum up some things about the process.

• The Screwball Awards were inspired by an atheist project called Fundies Say the Darndest Things which highlights screwy statements made by Christians…at least according to atheists who run the place. Screwball Awards, though, can be given to anyone; indeed, we sometimes give awards to Christians that also end up highlighted on FSTDT.

• Those who you encounter who think these Awards are mean-spirited, cruel, etc. should be directed to the “Norm’s Honest Questions About Screwballs” thread which is stickied atop this section.

• Those who want to dispute an award, or fight about something in an award, may post in these threads once, but thereafter must take their discussions to the stickied “Screwball Whine and Rant Thread.”

• I used to use everything in the threads, awarding them Gold, Silver, and Bronze, but my time became so limited that I now just award Golds and link to the thread if folks want to see the rest.

• To win Gold, a nomination must fulfill one or more criteria: It has to be sufficiently short, pithy, and/or poignant; it has to reflect something new or outrageous. For this reason, I will usually not select things such as, eg, extended dialogues, or arguments that we have seen repeatedly before, for the monthly feature and Gold Awards.

• Ultimately, what wins Gold or is nominated for Platinum is up to me; but I listen attentively to recommendations for the rankings.

That's all for now. I hope to have the January feature up on Monday sometime; one of you may have to watch for it and post the link here.

Due to rampant stupidity by Skeptics, and time issues, I'm only going to be on TWeb in my own (tektonics.org) section from now on. Deal with it.

***Rest in peace, Curtmudgeon!***

Then Morgoth turned upon Húrin, and he said: 'Fool, little among Men, and they are the least of all that speak! Have you seen the Valar, or measured the power of Manwë and Varda? Do you know the reach of the thought? Or do you think, perhaps, that their thought is upon you, and that they may shield you from afar?'

'I know not,' said Húrin. 'Yet so it might be, if they willed. For the Elder King shall not be dethroned while Arda endures.'

Well, I didn't think to post this up till I re-read it today.

Pai Whats-his-name for this bizarre question in the witch-hunting thread.

So my question about the Great Commission still remains. If Catholics, for example, stayed with these Nigerians until the message "sunk in," does John MacArthur follow the Catholics to undo the doctrinal damage? This is a very reasonable question.
Thanks to OBP for the reminder: Linky!

Two screwballs. One to the Freethought Association of Canada for posting ads around Toronto that says "There probably is no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life" for thinking that Christians actually worry about God's wrath.

Second one goes to Charles McVety, president of the Canada Family Action Coalition, for calling the Freethought Association "bigots" because Freethought is "intolerant of someone else's belief system" without realizing that he is intolerant of Freethought's belief system.

They're posting those ads in buses around the UK too. Except quite a lot of bus drivers are refusing to drive any bus that does carry these messages and bus drivers in my county threatened to go on strike if they put those ads up here.

Sounds a lot like looney tunes to me.

I can't believe they would be so bitter to do such a thing. The ones in the UK were helped funded by....... you guessed it...... Mr Looney Dawkins himself. Most people who believe in God and don't go to church and have an unorthodox faith believe they'll go to heaven. So what these ads are doing is taking away the prospect of heaven from people. So it kind of reads like this:

There probably is no God. na na na nah na. Now start worrying, because as soon as your life ends, you're doomed.

I think a better slogan would be "How could a process that makes organisms better off produce such an amazingly stupid person?"

And my favourite: "If Richard Dawkins did not exist, it would be neccessary to invent him."

Would an all powerful super demon allow the existance of someone as smart as JP Holding?

I think I refuted your claim.
