I am not being sarcastic here. As a Christian or Mormon what are three things you really like about Mormons/Mormonism.

I will start it off.

1. I like Mormon's devotion to family. One example of this is family home evening when mormon's set aside TV etc.. to do something as a family.

2. Enjoying life... I really find mormon's enjoy the same things I do. They in general like music and the arts. They enjoy a clean sense of humor.

3. Care for Jesus. While I disagree with mormon's theology I do believe many of mormon's really do have a great love for the Jesus in the Bible. His teachings and life. I admit their are great differences on who we would say jesus is (personhood) but I do believe there are areas of agreement on Jesus teachings. For example the Sermon on the Mount.

OK.. there are a few things. Can you come up with 3? I guess it's ok to be a little sarcastic but I encourage you to at least think of something positive?

I can't limit myself to just three, so I'll do five instead.

1. I love their firm commitment to the strength of the family and to good social and moral principles (e.g., pro-life).

2. I find the idea of marriage for time and eternity to be one of the most appealing doctrines I've seen in any Christian tradition.

3. I like the fact that, unlike some other religious groups, Mormonism actually does have apologists familiar with contemporary scholarship and, at least in certain respect, giving opponents a real run for their money on certain issues. That's a real advantage over groups like, e.g., Jehovah's Witnesses, which--for all the good things I could truthfully say about them--do not put nearly enough emphasis on education for my taste.

4. Glenn Beck. 'Nuff said.

5. One of my big hobbies is genealogy. I don't know if it's even possible to be involved in that and not feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude towards the LDS Church on that count. I mean, seriously now, thank you a lot; I don't know where I'd be without some of that previous research.

And DigitalInkling's third goes without saying.

I love the strong sense of devotion to servanthood in the Mormon church. I personally see that level unparalleled in most/many churches.

I love that they do blessings with oil for healings, etc.

I appreciate their desire to keep the mind free of the pollution of the world.

I appreciate their desire to keep the body clean of harmful substances.

I have had powerful experiences with 2 of the three of these very important biblical issues. One when I was in the church, and one since.

I know that they are not perfect (nor are any of us) and that they fail on many of these issues just like we do, but I believe God is all up in the LDS church, just as He is in any other church denomination.

If I have a mystical experience, an experience that's so overwhelming that I know now that there's a God, the cognitive fallout from that is irrelevant. The fact that that experience can be explained by psychologists in numerous ways is irrelevant to the fact that I now know.

Many of the things I love about being LDS have already been mentioned. So I will list three new things.

1) My son, who died at birth, and my daughter are sealed with me for time and all eternity.
2) General Conference - held every six months; we get to hear talks from the Prophet, Apostles, and other Church leaders. It is broadcast nationally and internationally.
3) Funeral potatoes! Don't laugh! Have you had them?

When I saw this thread I wept. God bless us, every one.

I have not a clue what a funeral potato is. Enlighten me? Why did you weep?

Hi Xmansmommy!

Funeral potatoes is the name of a food dish you will find at many, many LDS functions. They are basically an au gratin potato casserole that is enhanced with all kinds of yummy ingredients. I have seen different versions of it, but the main ingredients are pretty standard. They are always great!

They got the name funeral potatoes because the Relief Society has historically provided food for funeral receptions. Fortunately, they show up everywhere.

Let me know if you want the recipe.

I cried because I was very touched by the spirit of this thread. I love my Savior so much and I love the Church so much. It was wonderful to see appreciation shown where I usually see derision. My heart is full. Here I go again.

God bless,

jo

Jo,

You really got my intent here.

I am up for a challenging discussion on many topics and will start threads as well with challenges but I also think it is appropriate to understand that we share some common bonds.

I think many of us "anti" mormons really care about people but online it seems the online discussion or argument tends to suggest we don't.

I can't think of a Mormon I've ever met that after a religious discussion I wouldn't want to go have a Sprite (trying to stay within the word of wisdom) with them.

Which reminds me.. about a good post about the word of wisdom... for another thread.

Actually, we did take the Mormons out for lunch here once. Quite interesting. Two Mormons and two evangelicals walking into a little Jewish restaurant for lunch.
