Exodus Archaeology and theory was some of the first archaeology related reading I did. Namely it was the Book Return to Sodom and Gomorrah by Charles Pellegrino. This book concentrates on a tad more than Exodus but I found his theories in regards to this matter quite interesting.
It should be noted that Pellegrino has said he is atheitistical in regards to religion, but does not use religion to define his work. Pellegrino, as far as I have been able to find is credited with the idea of cloning a dinosaur from a mosquito trapped for millions of years in Amber and has written various novels and books on a variety of subjects. Throughout Sodom and Gomorrah he corresponds with Stephen Hawkings, Issac Asimov (which kind of tells the dates of the book) and a variety of other people. Anyway, on to some theory:
I like reading and talking about theories but do not have any evidence of my own to make my own judgment. Please note this when making responses
Plato, the bible, Egyptian history all talk about days of darkness, a continent sinking in one day, 7 deadly plagues. In China there is record of a black cloud coming from the west and in California trees as old as time record a period where there was little to no growth because the land was cold, sparkles of ash are in there too. Glaciologists talk about a period in a northern glaciers history where acid rain started to melt away the Ice, but eventually stopped. All of this happened around the year 1628 B.C.
Pellgrino postulates that had this event not happened we very well may be out in space right now, or advanced beyond our own reasoning as it stands now. If this event hadn't happened, the world may very well be a different place. Pellegrino postulates, with evidence provided from the sources named, as well as the findings of Spyridon Marinatos, that the explosion of Thera resulted in the destruction of Egypt’s major competitor (what ancient Egyptian texts refer to as the Keftiu) or the Minoan civilization.
When Thera went up it sent a huge cloud of ash up into the atmosphere and the mere sound of the explosion would have been loud enough to circle the world 28 times. It is theorized that this explosion dwarfs even Krakatoa in magnitude (perhaps as much as 50 times more powerful), making all of the little bombs we've sent to the Japanese look like fireworks.
But what does this have to do with exodus?
Well, during the reign of Hatshepsut and Tuthmosis III there is an account in the Ipuwer papyrus that talks about a death cloud from Israel. Interestingly enough this papyrus coincides with the book of exodus (Pellegrino states Exodus 20:14-15, 10:21-23, 7:21-22, 9:15, 10:21, 10:15, 9:23-26, 1:1, 14:5, 33:11 - in that order). This would place Tuthmosis in Egyptian pharaoh seat far later (by 100 years or so) than Egyptologists would place him (Pellegrino works, according to the quote in the back of the book by Stephen j Gould in the fields of archaeology, anthropology and the advanced mechanics of rocket design).
During the eruption of Thera there would be a tidal wave and a group of slaves standing around in the blackness of an Egyptian ashen morning such as that one, would be able to slip out relatively easily as the tidal waters of the nearby seas and oceans receded to form the wave. Telescoped into oral history and eventually settling into biblical text it could be said that this is what happened.
So there you have a theory on Exodus. He backs up his hypothesis rather well. I'd suggest this book to just about anyone. It touches on practically every subject involving humans and the Fertile Crescent. This guy can also write, it is probably the most well written non-fiction books I’ve ever laid eyes on.
