How much of Mormon rite and ceremony is taken from Masonic practice?

Robyn, that's a good question. Depending on who you ask, is what answer you get. The LDS temple endowments are more than the initial ceremony. They have baptisms for the dead, weddings, and family sealings that have no correlation to the Masonic rite. However, the initial endowment ceremony is very similar, although not so much so post 1990 changes. I'll post the similarities in a while. I must run for now...

This is simply not so. As a Mormon and a Master Mason, I assure you that if I were to get *really* technical, the list of similarities are pervasive and deep. It is not just the square and compasses (I don't know why you hesitate to use the terms here, because they are chisled onto public LDS buildings in Utah), but the relative positioning of them, and the moving of clothing from one side of the body to the other to "display" the appropriate symbol. Even the "return and report" sequence from the pre-1990 Endowment is drawn from the ritual opening of the Lodge and its three principal officers, as any who have seen both can attest.

When did Joseph Smith have intimate access to the Masonic Rites?
On March 15, 1842 Joseph Smith became a Mason in his general business office (History of the Church, vol. 4, pg. 551)
When did Joseph Smith instruct the other LDS Church leaders regarding the endowment and communication of key?
On May 4, 1842 Joseph Smith instructed the other LDS Church leaders on the principles and order of the Priesthood, attending to the washings, anointing, endowments and communication of keys. (History of the Church, vol. 5, pg. 2) This instruction took place only weeks after Joseph Smith became a Mason and in Joseph Smith's business office, the exact same place where he received the Masonic rites just weeks earlier. In addition, Joseph Smith's business office was the Masonic lodge room. Joseph Smith's temple records even indicate that he received his endowments on May 4, 1842 (Family Group Sheet-Father Temple Index Bureau).
In my opinion, the many similarities between the LDS endowment ceremony and the Masonic initiation could NOT have occurred by chance. There are definitely more than slight resemblances as even Gilbert Scharffs would not even concede to in his book "The Truth About the God Makers".
Do the two ceremonies have significant similarities? I think so, but you should decide for yourself.

Joseph Smith was probably so impressed with the Masonic ceremony that he made some changes to it and claimed he had "restored" the true order that the Masons were using in false form.
Now, I will respond as my former believing self.

The reason for the similarities between the Mormon endowment and the 19th century Masonic rituals is because the Masons had preserved them down through the ages in a somewhat adultered form from the ancient Jewish temple endowment. Joseph Smith restored the true order.
The original endowment was given to Adam and Eve when God made garments for them.
Later prophets were inspired to make changes.

Yes.
It's sort of like Mormons and early Christian apologists argued that Jesus was a virgin-born Savior God like those of the earlier pagans because those others were Satan's counterfeits to God's truth. Satan knew enough of God's plans for Jesus that Satan tried to frustrate God's plan by inspiring the pagans to believe in their own virgin-born Savior gods that weren't Jesus. As usual, Satan's efforts were not too effective.
POWELL:
I suspect that Joseph recognized that if Christians could successfully claim that pagan Savior Gods were counterfeits of Jesus then he and his Mormon religion could successfully claim that Freemasonry was a counterfeit of the true Temple endowment. The argument worked for me when I was a believer.
