The Witnesses learn from their channel, The Watchtower. The WT has been a master at watering down (as you say) things once taught. They are even a master at deception and altering their past. Here is one example that pertains to 1975.
(1968) TRUTH THAT LEADS TO ETERNAL LIFE
The book itself was listed in the Guinness Book of Records under the highest printings and the Awake! magazine reports that by the first part of 1982, the printing of this reached 102 million in 116 languages (April 22,1982,p.29)
On page 9 of the 1968 edition it says:
Also, as reported back in 1960, a former United States Secretary of State, Dean Acheson, declared that our time is :a period of unequaled instability, unequaled violence." And he warned: "I know enough of what is going on to assure you that, in fifteen years from today, this world is going to be too dangerous to live in."
(Fifteen years from 1960 would be 1975.)
The revised 1981 edition says:
Also, as reported back in 1960, a former United States Secretary of State, Dean Acheson, declared that our time is :a period of unequaled instability, unequaled violence." Based on what he knew was then going on in the world, it was his conclusion that soon "this world is going to be too dangerous to live in.
(Notice the change?)
The book "You Can Live Forever in Paradise on Earth" was released in 1982 as a replacement for the "Truth Book".

So how as the world got a better place in these years?
Try living in the Sudan, Iraq, or be one of the millions of millions that go to bead without food and have to watch their children die, its about time you woke up to what is happening in this world or go and live in these places and find out for yourself!
In some parts of this world in is so bads that people do not live now thay have to flee for their lives, talk about the real condition of this world, it a dangerious place and still getting worse. Read the headlines, we in the west get fat because we eat the food or throw it away to keep the price up so people in 3rd world places die from hunger, NO look again:-
(2 Timothy 3:1-5) . . .But know this, that in the last days critical times hard to deal with will be here. 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, self-assuming, haughty, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, disloyal, 3 having no natural affection, not open to any agreement, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, without love of goodness, 4 betrayers, headstrong, puffed up [with pride], lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godly devotion but proving false to its power; and from these turn away.. . .
This is more true now than ever from my view of world events"
