View Full Version : Having trouble coming up with a topic for debate...

I have to write a 7 page paper giving some sort of debate or persuasion on a topic of my choice... Only problem is religion and politics are off limits. I try coming up with a subject but my arguments always go back to religion or politics. It's only 7 pages, so it's not going to be something difficult once I find the topic, but does anyone have any suggestions?

How about:

Not Allowing Debate on Religion and Politics is Unfair
(A Polemic in Favor of Meta-Topics)

HEMP

find some stuff about hemp and hemp use

quick facts: you can make over 25,000 different products out of one plant(hemp plant), first geneva bibles were printed on hemp, first deisel engines ran on hemp, much more efficient than paper or cotton, hemp clothes last longer, blah blah blah blah blah...

oh yeah, i'm not a fan of marijuana, just hemp (little disclaimer)

also, see if you can find a speech by a guy named jello biafra called "grow more pot"

this is just an idea, and it should make for an interesting debate. plus it doesn't get into politics or religion

just an idea...

hehe, I like the topic of not allowing religion/politic debates is unfair. I think that I might write about Harry Potter... this is the first time I've ever been stuck for a topic on debate. :uhoh:

What about dress codes in public schools? (do current styles cause distraction?)

What about whether or not companies such as Coke and Pepsi should be allowed to sell their products in schools just because they give significant kick-backs to finance the education of youngsters in said schools. (right or wrong)

I'll think of some more.

Here's another one:

Yes or No. Teachers should be required to pass basic skills tests in order to obtain employment in a school district and then be required to take continuing education classes (at the expense of whom?)

Here's another one:

When a child misbehaves in school. Who is responsible? Parents? Teachers? Administrators? Who's responsible for discipline?

One of the raging debates of all time is whether Shakespeare is one person or many. Heck, they can't even agree on the spelling of Shakespeare - and there should be plenty of online stuff to peruse.

Transgenic crops are always a good topic to do. Most teachers for classes involving debating don't know much biology, either, so they just assume you've done a good job

In High School, anyway. If you're in college you should pick something you know about. Pick an ethical issue and just don't involve religion and you should be okay.

A big issue here is over the issue of floridating the water.

The dress code/uniform idea is a good topic. I went to three different high schools* and one required uniforms but the other two didn't. One of the schools (in Hawaii) was very lax -- cut-offs, t-shirts, and flip-flops were the norm -- even many of the teachers didn't dress up. All in all, I think I learned better in the more relaxed school, but I understand the reasons for dress-codes as well.
