I do them by hand using paper forms. Turn in my federal taxes the first week of Feb. I already got my return.

I did mine for free online and emailed them...... all for free. At least, the federal part, anyway.... they wanted 20 bucks for the state one so I did that one myself on paper.

Great, now you can do mine.

I do them by hand using paper forms.

Even if you do them manually you can download the forms from the IRS and do the forms in Adobe. You don't have to write anything except your signature.

I used to try and do mine and my wifes until I figured out that 50 bucks and a half hour at a tax prep place that e-files so you get your return quick beats spending an entire evening bang my head on the monitor while I try and figure it out.

I set up an EXCEL spreadsheet that interlinks both my state and federal returns. Some that Schedule D stuff this year is not fun to do by hand. Once you set up a spreadsheet, it's easy to update it for the next years new laws. And its fun! Homemade Turbo tax.

Ah, that pesky "render unto Caesar" thing...

Seriously DD, what software did you end up using? I've used both TurboTax and TaxCut and I find I like TT a bit more. And usually if you wait long enough, you can get rebates so that it's practically free! And then, you can write off whatever portion of the expense wasn't covered by rebate!

Wheee! It almost makes doing your taxes fun! Well, almost, as in "if I had a dollar I'd be almost rich", but at least it's better than doing it manually!

I mailed my hard-earned money to Uncle Sam today. I love how I even have to cover the cost of postage to send them my money.

I used TaxCut. It was pretty easy. I got a bit of a rebate on it. And yes it sure is better than doing it manually!

Hah! We have so much stuff to send in (my hubby is self-employed) that nothing fits in those little dinky envelopes they send us to use, so:

I have to BUY big brown envelopes, and THEN pay at least 3 times the amount of postage due on those little teeny things!

Moss... if you don't mind me asking, what does your husband do?
He teaches mostly Hydrogen Sulphide gas safety at a privately owned safety school here in Central Alberta. He also teaches, but rarely now, first aid, Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG), Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Confined Entry, and a few others that I can't remember.

All are associated with the petroleum industry.

I can't imagine having to go back to all those forms! <shudder>

I'm not sure where you got the idea that I'm a lawyer and I can't figure out if I should consider it an insult or a compliment.

Although I did seriously consider law school (and took the LSAT....twice. Yikes!), my undergraduate degree is in Music. I'm currently a project manager for a Fortune 100 health services company (and yes, we offer insurance!).

In the UK they simplified the tax system a long time ago, and I really wish they would do the same here. Just to pick a small example, if you give to charity, it is considered an after-tax donation, and the charity reclaims the tax from the government. Something similar happens with mortgage interest. The general idea is to transfer the effort to corporations that can employ a few experts and use computer systems to get it done correctly and accurately. They've also been phasing out deductions over the years. The effect is that (providing you don't run a business or are self employed or something like that, when you are better off employing an accountant) the tax return is four pages (or used to be) with very large print and about a dozen boxes to fill in. They don't even bug you if you don't file, as it's all arranged so that you've probably paid about the right amount anyway.

My wife (who is American) does the taxes for which I am very grateful. Without her, I would almost certainly cart the whole nasty mess down to H&R Block and pay whatever it cost; this would be infinitely preferable to the hassle of try to figure it all out for myself, even using a computer package.

I sometimes wonder just how much effort goes into all this, adding up the time spent by tax accountants, individual tax payers and of course the IRS, and how much more usefully all the time could be spent.

 Ah, the picture is much clearer, now!

The tag line actually goes with my screen name and avatar. The "esq" is used in its earlier connotation, denoting a member of the gentry.

Oh okay, in my profession that is the designation attorneys use. I don't personally like it, it reminds me of horse grooms.

Bought the software and did them. All online. Awesome!

I once did a company's tax return for a year. I noticed a strange calculation in the previous year's tax return. They had added an extra $501,000 to their income. I worked out that they should have deducted the $501,000 amount instead.

We applied for a refund (for the tax on $1,003,000). The Revenue took about 4 years, but gave it to the company.

The moral is - check your additions and substracts.

If I had a $1M error on my tax return, I think I'd notice.
