I propose to be at Cafe East in the Queen Street Mall at 10am on Saturday May 1. To find Cafe East, stand right in the middle of the Mall, where it crosses what remains of Albert St, and then stumble slightly downhill. You'll be in Cafe East.

They have a good selection of coffees and mocktails; pick out your favourite drink, and ask the counter staff to put it on Sylas's tab. The magic password is "T-Web". They'll also help you find me.

Lurkers, hangers-on and offsping are welcome also. Offer is good for the first thirty people to arrive, or until I get bored and leave, because I have no-one to talk to. So far there is one other taker.

If anyone has strong feelings about relocating or rescheduling, speak up. I'm flexible; except for normal office hours or Friday evenings. I'll adjust the time to try and maximise the ability of people to drop by. Perfer an afternoon? A weeknight? Let me know.

Cheers -- Sylas

Let me start packing the bags. Cancel church for the next week or so. Find a few spare thousand dollars. And I'll be right there.

I like my coffee black without sugar.

Be there in about a day or so.

Hmm methinks you will regret this offer Sylas. I have at least 4 friends backpacking around the world who are in Brisbane at the moment as well as two mates who live there permanently (students at UQ). None of them have much money at all so I might have to inform them of your offer! I can't vouch for their behaviour!

I've already saved the cost of milk and suger for truthman... if any of your friends are at all interested in T-Web, or if you feel like using this as an excuse to get them interested in T-Web, then go for it. I'll be amazed if anything like thirty people can show up; but that's the tab limit. I'm good for it.

By the way, the city apparently provides free wireless internet access (http://www.ourbrisbane.com/help/wifi/) in the mall. You need a laptop and a 802.11b Wi-Fi (http://www.ourbrisbane.com/help/wifi/access.htm) adapter card. I have never tried it myself, but I know folks who have. I might see if I can get hold of a suitable laptop for May 1.

:bump:

For anyone who happens to be in Brisbane; the offer remains good. I think bandecoot might show up; that was the impetus for this idea.

The offer holds for anyone, even Steve's mates at UQ, if he wants to send them along. Checked out the venue, and will express now a constraint that the offer does not extend to the cocktails or the expensive champagne. But any non-alcoholic drink is fine. An intriguing selection of mocktails is available. I'm also fine with any beer or any house wine except the really expensive champagne they have on offer.

I don't think there is any way 30 people will show. I'll be happy with two of us and excited with four. But I am indeed prepared to stand for thirty if it happens; that would certainly tell us something very interesting about the scope of the internet.

I'll let you know if anything happens or if it is all just a bust. Depending on results, those who are unable to make it downunder might like to try a similar experiment in other locations.

It was a bust. Associated image shows me with all my friends. Better luck next time. I'll probably try again if there is a chance someone is in town.

BTW, 'Timmies' is a coffee that's very good to some of us Canadians, made by a coffee-donut shop called 'Tim Horton's' :)
