what exactly are the 'traditions of the jews'? i'm interested in reading some of the extra-biblical jewish source. i have heard of the mishnah, the rashi, the different talmuds, are these all different forms of the same thing - commentaries, expositions, etc. on hebrew scripture? (i'll leave out the kabbalah for now as well... as i understand it, it's not orthodox, is it?)

and then, what would be a good introduction to this? i picked up louis ginzberg's 'legends of the bible' (condensed 1-volume version of 'legends of the jews', like $12 at barnes & noble too!), and i got a book somewhere else by kadushkin called 'a conceptual guide to the mekilta', but not much else yet.

thanks in advance...
