View Full Version : On the rep system

Okay guys there are some who have issues with the current rep system... it is being changed, so how about holding off until we see how that goes? I am in agreement with some of the criticisms and have varyiing feelings about neg rep. There may be some frustration with the length of time... good things come to those who wait :teeth:
cirisme is very open to hear from anyone with their feelings

Maybe we could have an open thread here or somewhere in which official suggestions for what members would like to see in the new rep system are addressed?

IT's called Cirisme's PM box!

Maybe you could find a way to make it more light hearted, so that when people get negged they see something mildly humorous rather than a big red box that kind of looks like a cinnamon chicklet...

Personally I like the idea of positive rep points but not negative. By only giving out positives it should remove a lot of the problems that seem to be cropping up (and its more pleasant).
If there is something negative to say, then I'd prefer it if it were said out in the open on a thread. Things are more honest and acountable that way.

Not always. Oftentimes, the first step in resolving a conflict ought to be to take the person aside and talk to them privately. That way, nobody is publically shamed.

Another idea: Instead of having one bar, have a green bar and a red bar. That way someone's criticism doesn't take away from your previous accomplishments.

Ok, fair point, but in such a case I think it would be more appropriate to send a pm than give someone a negative rep point.

I usually only +Rep, I wouldn't have the guts to -Rep someone.

I think we should keep it as it is. Sure some people goes greedy as soon as we get some way to show our opinion about them but that doesn't mean that we should protect them or aid them in their quest to get a huge green bar. Lifes tough and it gets even tougher when you start to act with greed in your heart. That is something we all need to learn and removing all the negative side effects with greed is a bad way to do it.

Personally, after having thought a lot about the current rep system, I came to a couple of conclusions..
First, the current system for giving and receiving reps does actually work.. the part that doesn't work is the users :teeth: Some people don't seem to understand that 1) there are valid and invalid reasons for 'repping', and 2) that each rep has consequences.. be them pluses or minuses. Because of this, the system becomes open to abuse by individuals either not understanding properly, or by people purposely out to abuse it.
I came to the conclusion that one of the ways to solve this, without too much alteration, is to have it so everyone else can see WHY everyone else was rep'd.. good and bad. That way, everyone can see peoples reasons for doing the rep, and come to an understanding as to whether it was warranted or not. It would even work to add 'voting' to that..
Basically, the members would police themselves by giving a general conscensus about a rep.. if they want.. by adding a 'vote' to a rep.. this won't change the rep in anyway.. but if enough people feel the rep was unwarranted, the person who received it could petition the Mods and Admins to have it removed - which, I don't think, would produce any more work than they get today over the rep system. And over time, I think would reduce it. It's an extra step for the users.. but if you want a 'valid' rep system, I think this is a good step.
What would this do? It would hopefully stop silly neg reps, as the person giving them will be exposed to all the members, plus the members would be able to vote the rep away.. and an eye would be kept on that persons repping. It would also allow people to see what the reps where given for.. for instance, although I do make theistic posts etc.. I have received some rep for my humor and such (you sorry, sad people  ).. people may be mistaken if they think I have a rep for being a real nice sweet person, or being a giant apologist with all sorts of knowledge etc.. in other words, no one really knows right now what other peoples 'reps' are for, and I think opening that up changes the dynamics dramatically.
Secondly, without such changes as I make above, to work 'better', the current rep system would need a 'review board'. These people would have to review reps as they can, and try and evaluate if they are valid. This too would stop the rep wars, but would also put a lot more burden on the Mods and Admins, and so isn't as good as my first solution, imho.
Other than that, I agree that it needs some kind of alteration.. and I'm pretty sure Cir and Yx won't dissapoint us with whatever fix they come up with..
Just a shame that we can't fix some of the users :teeth:

I was thinking about posting a suggestion on the rep system before I saw this thread, but I didn't know where it would go.
How about moderator approval for negative reps? That way the people who deserve them can still get them, just not for absurd reasons.
I personally don't use the rep system, although I considered negative repping BeHereNow for a certain photo (I can't remember if I followed through. Can you field that one, BHN?), but I'm tired of hearing the complaining.

One thing that I definitely like about the rep system is seeing which of my posts get positive reps by others. That helps me to see when I have stated my case clearly and in ways that others recognize. I like to see when my arguments have struck a chord with others and they agree with me. Likewise, I enjoy being able to +rep others when I agree with what they say. I don't always have time to contribute more to a particular point that someone else makes, but to just reply to it and say "I agree" in the thread does not do much for the flow of the discussion. Rep points takes care of that nicely and hopefully encourages the receiver to continue developing that particular line of thought. So I hope that option is still available in the new, revamped system.

I think there should be 2 seperated rep bars and we should be able to report iresposible reps and that our rep bars would reset a certain point so there are no people in power that keep accumalating a incredible amount of reps...

Also - instead of neg-repping, couldn't we just have a button that sends a mild electrical shock to a person's keyboard? I am not sure what kind of programming you would need for that, probably something fancy like Java or something.

In one of my old threads, I asked the hard-hitting question, "Are Twebbers hypersensitive"... The issue of neg rep is certainly proving that to be true...! I think rep otta be like the pearls system, in that you can give people good rep (or abstain), and just junk neg rep. This way, it's more supportive and nobody feels like they've been burned (or slandered, for you hypers out there...!) ... Also, I think the rep system is cool because you don't give up anything by pos repping, unlike the pearl system where you hadda give it away forever. If this turns repping into a Tweb mutual appreciation society, so what...? You can always put people you really can't get along with on your ignore list, anyway, so let's accentuate the positive...! :thumb:

Jimmy Higgins with a few belated suggestions that are coming way too late in the process of the Rep System Development or JKG for short.
- Could we perhaps have a limit of reps to be given a day? A person with only 3 reps to give a day (of which can not be accumulated) would make a person think twice before wasting a rep in retaliation.
- I like the being able to see what other people have noted in their reps. More importantly, I think the system must require that text be entered for every rep. However, I don't think a rep should be challengable. That could make yxboom's life an udder disaster. I know... udder!
- POTD's can only come from posts that were positively rep'd.
- Be able to see who each user has rep'd in addition to who have rep'd them.
- Create a more diverse way of allowing a rep to the same user. IE either every 20 users rep'd, then user A can rep the same user B again or if a certain amount of time passes in between reps to a specific user B, ie 1 week or something.
- Make Busheses a rainbow...
- And the ability to remove a rep or change a rep within x hours or days of giving one, after perhaps a conversation between the two parties regarding the rep.
- And multiple rep levels. Instead of good or bad, really good, good, bad, really bad.

I like the idea, but with the other idea's I've implemented it probably won't work.(the idea behind the new system is that we want everyone to rate every post they see...more on that later)
