Christmas Song for preschool

Still trying to find my way around on this campus, so if I'm in the wrong spot, please point me in the right direction.

I am trying to come up with a simple little song that preschool age kids could sing for our Christmas Service.

This is what I have so far...


Twinkle, Twinkle, Big, Bright Star
We have seen you from afar
Up above Bethlehem so bright
Showing where Jesus was born tonight
Twinkle, Twinkle, Big, Bright Star
We have seen you from afar

Twinkle, Twinkle, Big, Bright Star
We have seen you from afar
Heavenly hosts, and angels sing
Praises of the newborn King
Twinkle, Twinkle, Big, Bright Star
We have seen you from afar


I was thinking I could read a Scripture between the verses that correlate with what was just sung. for example, Luke 2:13-14.


Can you help think of words to sing that would work? Remember that it needs to go to the beat of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" and that it is preschoolers that I am working with.

Also, if you can think of Scripture that flows with the verses, that would be helpful.

The meter is really off in the 3rd and 4th lines. And big, bright stars don't really twinkle...they burn like hellfire!

How about this:

Twinkle, Twinkle, Big, Bright Star
We have seen you from afar
Calling us to Elohim
Showing us the way to Him
Twinkle, Twinkle, Big, Bright Star
Jesus calls us from afar

Or this:

Twinkle, Twinkle, Big, Bright Star
We have seen you from afar
Babies rest in Straw De-liced
Ushering in the AntiChrist
Twinkle, Twinkle, Big, Bright Star

There is nothing sweeter than preschool children singing a simple Christmas song. Having worked with preschoolers, may I suggest another strategy?

Children pick up simple tunes fairly easily. It's teaching words that takes more time.

How about teaching them a chorus from a carol in the hymnal? Or find something where the phrases repeat. Such as:

Go tell it on the mountain
over the hills and everywhere
Go tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born!
a musical flourish or drum, and repeat once.

The Sussex Carol
On Christmas Night all Christians sing
To hear the news the angels bring
(repeat once)

"Away in a manger" is more ambitions, but if the children are 3 1/2, and you use hand motions to reinforce, it can be done, if you're in a preschool situation and will see the children 10 times before performance. Chose the simpler tune.

There's always "We wish you a merry Christmas" with a reclaimed refrain of your own writing. Here's mine, which I'm sure you can improve upon:

We wish you a merry Christmas
We wish you a merry Christmas
We wish you a merry Christmas
And a happy new year
With angels we sing
of our newborn King!
We wish you a merry Christmas
And a happy new year.

Whenever you teach children, you are also quite possibly contributing to their families' culture.
