It is quite popular on Mother's Day to talk about the important role of mothers in their son's or daughter's lives. We talk about how formative their influence is and how much it impacts who the child becomes.
Sometimes what matters more is the impact of the child on the mother.
In fact, there is one child who was impacted very little by his mother's rearing, and what truly mattered is the impact he had on her life.
Obviously I am talking about the relationship between Jesus and Mary.
Luke 2:16-19
16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.
17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child,
18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.
19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.
What child is this?
He who is worshipped in a cradle, He who has angels proclaiming His birth, who is He?
He is the one in whom all the world could find salvation. He is the one who suffered and died. He is the one who took all the sin of the world upon Himself. He is the one who rose on the third day so that we might live with Him forever.
He is the Christ, the Son of the Living God, He is our Lord.
So today remember not just your own mother, but the one mother who could but marvel at who her Son was, who could only watch in horror as He was killed, and who surely lept for joy when He rose again.
Mary, the Mother of our Lord,
very likely the first Christian.
