To talk with God
Is to talk with oneself with true words
To hear God speaking
Is to hear oneself utter true words
The words
that strive to express accurately
what I apprehend of God's being
despite an unconquerable, inherent ignorance
What I hope of Him
Despite the transcendent order
that separates Him from myself
What I long to be
Through that part of me
which is truest
What I apprehend of my own being
When I am present to myself in unwavering lucidity
IS the ONLY prayer
In the language of Man
That is also an intelligible language for God
Addressing it to myself in recollection
I stand before God
Addressing it to God in utter adoration
I enter into my own presence
In the measure in which it is given to me
When I speak thus
God listens to me
When I speak to myself thus
God speaks to me
Is to talk with oneself with true words
To hear God speaking
Is to hear oneself utter true words
The words
that strive to express accurately
what I apprehend of God's being
despite an unconquerable, inherent ignorance
What I hope of Him
Despite the transcendent order
