View Full Version : Why Cosmogony? Why Get it Right?

I post this as it relates to the basics of understanding cosmogony in context with other cultures and our notions of the way things should be as opposed to how they are. If you have a background in science and humanities, you may have had to memorize all the Greek and Roman gods and were told they are a myth. Fair enough. There is something discordant with writing off things as truth-telling myth. This is too long for one post, so I will post in two. You will see why I posted it. There was a lot of incredulity about me taking angels seriously. Most figured I am just ignorant, which is true, but about what? I think people do not read the Bible who post here, or do not believe it if they do. This is important to cosmogony for many reasons. Very.
Why Cosmogony, why try to get it right? For one thing Jesus said that the End Times would be as they were in the days of Noah. I found that the different cosmogonies, theogonies, and cosmologies of cultures around the world give variations on when the earth began and under what circumstances. Some mistake stories to be creation stories when they are really stories of restoration. The Hopi seem to have it right and their prophecies are a lot like those from the Old Testament. One Hopi thinks they descended from the people of Sumer and lists linguistic evidence that is compelling. The official diffusionist and anti-diffusionist stances miss some central elements that actually obscure cosmogony. In any event, understanding what the Flood of Noah means historically and relating it to the fallen ones does not seem important. It is not as far as Faith goes in some measure. However, if you do not want to understand it and do not look into, it seems one hasn't any standing to give much of an opinion about it. Theistic Evolution sees the Bible as a treasure trove of justifying evolution and misses most of what is in the Bible. Jesus said to seek first the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness.

One reason I am posting this is because the biggest basis for forming an opinion on angels was the comment that they do not marry in Heaven. While that is true, there is more to the history of them and besides, they got in trouble for violating their boundaries set by God. Jesus did not say they could not have sex with women. It just ended them up in everlasting darkness, not a fun thing. This is in two parts because it is lengthy. Here is part one. Just as sure as I do not post the Biblical references, someone will claim there is nothing about the progeny of the fallen ones in the Bible. So, I will post the other part too. I also posted under a different topic something on Ovid and others. There are many others I could refer to, but they are a start as Chuck Missler indicates below.

BIBLICAL FLOOD SURVIVORS: GIANTS

Textual Controversy: Mischievous Angels or Sethites?

by Chuck Missler

Why did God send the judgment of the Flood in the days of Noah? Far more than simply a historical issue, the unique events leading to the Flood are a prerequisite to understanding the prophetic implications of our Lord's predictions regarding His Second Coming.

The strange events recorded in Genesis 6 were understood by the ancient rabbinical sources, as well as the Septuagint translators, as referring to fallen angels procreating weird hybrid offspring with human women-known as the "Nephilim." So it was also understood by the early church fathers. These bizarre events are also echoed in the legends and myths of every ancient culture upon the earth: the ancient Greeks, the Egyptians, the Hindus, the South Sea Islanders, the American Indians, and virtually all the others.

Textual Controversy: Mischievous Angels or Sethites?

However, many students of the Bible have been taught that this passage in Genesis 6 actually refers to a failure to keep the "faithful" lines of Seth separate from the "worldly" line of Cain. The idea has been advanced that after Cain killed Abel, the line of Seth remained separate and faithful, but the line of Cain turned ungodly and rebellious. The "Sons of God" are deemed to refer to leadership in the line of Seth; the "daughters of men" is deemed restricted to the line of Cain. The resulting marriages ostensibly blurred an inferred separation between them. (Why the resulting offspring are called the "Nephilim" remains without any clear explanation.)

Since Jesus prophesied, "As the days of Noah were, so shall the coming of the Son of Man be," it becomes essential to understand what these days included.

Origin of the Sethite View

It was in the 5th century a.d. that the "angel" interpretation of Genesis 6 was increasingly viewed as an embarrassment when attacked by critics. (Furthermore, the worship of angels had begun within the church. Also, celibacy had also become an institution of the church. The "angel" view of Genesis 6 was feared as impacting these views.)

Celsus and Julian the Apostate used the traditional "angel" belief to attack Christianity. Julius Africanus resorted to the Sethite interpretation as a more comfortable ground. Cyril of Alexandria also repudiated the orthodox "angel" position with the "line of Seth" interpretation. Augustine also embraced the Sethite theory and thus it prevailed into the Middle Ages. It is still widely taught today among many churches who find the literal "angel" view a bit disturbing. There are many outstanding Bible teachers who still defend this view.

'And Also After That':
The Return of the Nephilim?

by Chuck Missler

Last month we explored the importance of understanding Genesis 6. The straightforward presentation of the text seems to clearly portray a strange union of fallen angels with women to produce a hybrid race called the "Nephilim," or fallen ones.

We enumerated the reasons we accept the "angel" view and why the liberal "Sethite" view is inadequate.

Far beyond simply a misunderstanding of the forthright presentation of the text, the "Sethite" view also obscures apprehension of the prophetic Scriptures.

Post-Flood Occurrences

Regarding the Nephilim, Genesis 6:4 also includes the haunting phrase, "...and also after that...." Apparently these strange events were not confined just to the period before the Flood.

We find that there seems to be some recurrence of those things which resulted in unusual "giants" appearing in subsequent periods later in the Old Testament narrative, specifically the giant-races of Canaan.

There were a number of tribes such as the Rephaim, the Emim, the Horim, and Zamsummim, that were giants. The kingdom of Og, the King of Bashan, was the "land of the giants." Later, we also find Arba, Anak, and his seven sons (the "Anakim") also as giants, along with the famed Goliath and his four brothers.

When God had revealed to Abraham that the land of Canaan was to be given to him, Satan had over 400 years to plant his "mine field" of Nephilim!

When Moses sent his twelve spies to reconnoiter the Land of Canaan, they came back with the report of giants in the land. (The term used was Nephilim.) Their fear of those terrifying creatures resulted in their being relegated to wandering in the wilderness for 38 years.

When Joshua and the nation Israel later entered the land of Canaan, they were instructed to wipe out every man, woman and child of certain tribes. That strikes us as disturbingly severe. It would seem that in the Land of Canaan, there again was a "gene pool problem."

These Rephaim, Nephilim, and others seem to have been established as an advance guard to obstruct Israel's possession of the Promised Land. Was this also a stratagem of Satan?

The Days of Noah

Perhaps the most direct prophetic reference involving these things was the peculiar warning of our Lord Jesus Himself:

And as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.

Luke 17:26

What does that mean? He also warned:

And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

Luke 21:25,26 (emphasis added)

(The late Walter Martin loved to include a "flying saucer" gesture with his hand when quoting this verse!)

Is it possible that the UFOs - and their occupants - are part of an end-time scenario?

The Miry Clay of Daniel 2

The famous dream of Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel Chapter 2 appears to lay out all of Gentile history until God ultimately intervenes and sets up His own kingdom.

The various metals which make up the image in the dream are well known to serious students of prophecy. Even our common expression, "the idol has feet of clay," comes to us from this classic passage.

But what is represented by the "miry clay" in this image? It seems to be strangely mixed-but not completely-with the iron in the dream. The term "miry clay" refers to clay made from dust, a Biblical idiom which suggests death. )

When Daniel interprets this for us he makes an especially provocative allusion in verse 43:

And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.

Daniel 2:43

As he switches to a personal pronoun, they, "shall mingle themselves with the seed of men..." This is extremely suggestive when viewed in light of the warning of our Lord in Luke 17:26, ostensibly directing us to look more closely at Genesis 6.

Just what (or who) are "mingling with the seed of men?" These would seem to refer to some beings who are not the seed of men themselves!

Could this be a hint of a return to the mischief of Genesis 6? It staggers the mind to consider the potential significance of Daniel's passage and its implications for the future global governance.

Are these "aliens" so prolific that they constitute a political constituency?

OG: KING OF THE GIANTS

Deuteronomy 1

Record of Og’s defeat by Israelites in Context of History of Moses

1These be the words which Moses spake unto all Israel on this side Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red1 sea, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab. 2(There are eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of mount Seir unto Kadeshbarnea.) 3And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all that the LORD had given him in commandment unto them; 4After he had slain Sihon the king of the Amorites, which dwelt in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, which dwelt at Astaroth in Edrei: 5On this side Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to declare this law, saying, 6The LORD our God spake unto us in Horeb, saying, Ye have dwelt long enough in this mount: 7Turn you, and take your journey, and go to the mount of the Amorites, and unto all the places nigh thereunto, in the plain, in the hills, and in the vale, and in the south, and by the sea side, to the land of the Canaanites, and unto Lebanon, unto the great river, the river Euphrates. 8Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed after them.2

Deuteronomy 3

Record of Og defeated by Israelites

1Then we turned, and went up the way to Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei. 2And the LORD said unto me, Fear him not: for I will deliver him, and all his people, and his land, into thy hand; and thou shalt do unto him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon. 3So the LORD our God delivered into our hands Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people: and we smote him until none was left to him remaining. 4And we took all his cities at that time, there was not a city which we took not from them, threescore cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 5All these cities were fenced with high walls, gates, and bars; beside unwalled towns a great many. 6And we utterly destroyed them, as we did unto Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children, of every city. 7But all the cattle, and the spoil of the cities, we took for a prey to ourselves. 8And we took at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites the land that was on this side Jordan, from the river of Arnon unto mount Hermon; 9(Which Hermon the Sidonians call Sirion; and the Amorites call it Shenir;) 10All the cities of the plain, and all Gilead, and all Bashan, unto Salchah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.3

Deuteronomy 3

The Size of Og, the King of the Giants:

11For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of giants; behold, his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; is it not in Rabbath of the children of Ammon? nine cubits was the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a man.4

Most assume that Moses used the Hebrew cubit as the standard unit of measurement in the Bible. New evidence suggested by Ron Wyatt suggests that this is not the case. Moses was familiar with the Egyptian cubit and likely the Hebrew cubit dates sometime after him.

1 Cubit (Hebrew) is equal to 1.1667 Foot (Standard)

1 Cubit (Roman) is equal to 1.5000 Foot (Standard)

1 Cubit (Egyptian) is equal to 1.5000 Foot (Standard)

If the Egyptian (Roman as well) cubit is used as the standard unit, Og was large enough to require a coffin 13.5 feet in length and 6 feet in width.

If the Hebrew cubit is used as the standard unit, Og’s coffin was 10.5003 feet long and 4.6668 wide.

Bashan. Famous for its pastures and its oaks.5

Edrei. Said to have been six miles from Ashteroth, Og’s capital city.6

Deuteronomy 4

The Record of Og Stated After Moses Gives Ten Commandments

41Then Moses severed three cities on this side Jordan toward the sunrising; 42That the slayer might flee thither, which should kill his neighbour unawares, and hated him not in times past; and that fleeing unto one of these cities he might live: 43Namely, Bezer in the wilderness, in the plain country, of the Reubenites; and Ramoth in Gilead, of the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, of the Manassites. 44And this is the law which Moses set before the children of Israel: 45These are the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which Moses spake unto the children of Israel, after they came forth out of Egypt, 46On this side Jordan, in the valley over against Bethpeor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon, whom Moses and the children of Israel smote, after they were come forth out of Egypt: 47And they possessed his land, and the land of Og king of Bashan, two kings of the Amorites, which were on this side Jordan toward the sunrising; 48From Aroer, which is by the bank of the river Arnon, even unto mount Sion, which is Hermon, 49And all the plain on this side Jordan eastward, even unto the sea of the plain, under the springs of Pisgah.7

Deuteronomy 29

Og’s Defeat in Context with the Lord’s Preparation of the Children of Israel

1These are the words of the covenant, which the LORD commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, beside the covenant which he made with them in Horeb. 2And Moses called unto all Israel, and said unto them, Ye have seen all that the LORD did before your eyes in the land of Egypt unto Pharaoh, and unto all his servants, and unto all his land; 3The great temptations which thine eyes have seen, the signs, and those great miracles: 4Yet the LORD hath not given you an heart to perceive, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day. 5And I have led you forty years in the wilderness: your clothes are not waxen old upon you, and thy shoe is not waxen old upon thy foot. 6Ye have not eaten bread, neither have ye drunk wine or strong drink: that ye might know that I am the LORD your God. 7And when ye came unto this place, Sihon the king of Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, came out against us unto battle, and we smote them: 8And we took their land, and gave it for an inheritance unto the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to the half tribe of Manasseh. 9Keep therefore the words of this covenant, and do them, that ye may prosper in all that ye do.8

The Children of Israel were purified in the desert for 40 years in preparation for their victory over Og.

Deuteronomy 31

Og’s Defeat in Context with Moses’ Assures the Children of Israel Based on the Lord’s Guidance

1And Moses went and spake these words unto all Israel. 2And he said unto them, I am an hundred and twenty years old this day; I can no more go out and come in: also the LORD hath said unto me, Thou shalt not go over this Jordan. 3The LORD thy God, he will go over before thee, and he will destroy these nations from before thee, and thou shalt possess them: and Joshua, he shall go over before thee, as the LORD hath said. 4And the LORD shall do unto them as he did to Sihon and to Og, kings of the Amorites, and unto the land of them, whom he destroyed. 5And the LORD shall give them up before your face, that ye may do unto them according unto all the commandments which I have commanded you. 6Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. 7And Moses called unto Joshua, and said unto him in the sight of all Israel, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou must go with this people unto the land which the LORD hath sworn unto their fathers to give them; and thou shalt cause them to inherit it. 8And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.9

Joshua 9

The Fame and Meaning of Og’s Defeat in Context with Neighboring Nations

3And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai, 4They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up; 5And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy. 6And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us. 7And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you? 8And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye? 9And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt, 10And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth. 11Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us. 12This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy: 13And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey. 14And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.10

Joshua 12

The extent of Og’s rule:

4And the coast of Og king of Bashan, which was of the remnant of the giants, that dwelt at Ashtaroth and at Edrei, 5And reigned in mount Hermon, and in Salcah, and in all Bashan, unto the border of the Geshurites and the Maachathites, and half Gilead, the border of Sihon king of Heshbon.11

Joshua 13

The Significance of Og’s Defeat in Reference to the Inheritance of the Children of Israel

29And Moses gave inheritance unto the half tribe of Manasseh: and this was the possession of the half tribe of the children of Manasseh by their families. 30And their coast was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, threescore cities: 31And half Gilead, and Ashtaroth, and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were pertaining unto the children of Machir the son of Manasseh, even to the one half of the children of Machir by their families.12

I Kings 4

Record of Og’s Defeat in Context with the Kings of Israel

13The son of Geber, in Ramothgilead; to him pertained the towns of Jair the son of Manasseh, which are in Gilead; to him also pertained the region of Argob, which is in Bashan, threescore great cities with walls and brasen bars: 14Ahinadab the son of Iddo had Mahanaim: 15Ahimaaz was in Naphtali; he also took Basmath the daughter of Solomon to wife: 16Baanah the son of Hushai was in Asher and in Aloth: 17Jehoshaphat the son of Paruah, in Issachar: 18Shimei the son of Elah, in Benjamin: 19Geber the son of Uri was in the country of Gilead, in the country of Sihon king of the Amorites, and of Og king of Bashan; and he was the only officer which was in the land.13

Nehemiah 9

Record of Og’s Defeat in Context with the Acts of Disobedience of the Children of Israel

20Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst. 21Yea, forty years didst thou sustain them in the wilderness, so that they lacked nothing; their clothes waxed not old, and their feet swelled not. 22Moreover thou gavest them kingdoms and nations, and didst divide them into corners: so they possessed the land of Sihon, and the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan. 23Their children also multipliedst thou as the stars of heaven, and broughtest them into the land, concerning which thou hadst promised to their fathers, that they should go in to possess it. 24So the children went in and possessed the land, and thou subduedst before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gavest them into their hands, with their kings, and the people of the land, that they might do with them as they would. 25And they took strong cities, and a fat land, and possessed houses full of all goods, wells digged, vineyards, and oliveyards, and fruit trees in abundance: so they did eat, and were filled, and became fat, and delighted themselves in thy great goodness. 26Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their backs, and slew thy prophets which testified against them to turn them to thee, and they wrought great provocations. 27Therefore thou deliveredst them into the hand of their enemies, who vexed them: and in the time of their trouble, when they cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and according to thy manifold mercies thou gavest them saviours, who saved them out of the hand of their enemies.14

Numbers 21

Record of Og defeated by Israelites

31Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites. 32And Moses sent to spy out Jaazer, and they took the villages thereof, and drove out the Amorites that were there. 33And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he, and all his people, to the battle at Edrei.15

The Lord is Mighty: Examples Including the Memory of the Defeat of Og

5For I know that the LORD is great, and that our Lord is above all gods. 6Whatsoever the LORD pleased, that did he in heaven, and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places. 7He causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings for the rain; he bringeth the wind out of his treasuries. 8Who smote the firstborn of Egypt, both of man and beast. 9Who sent tokens and wonders into the midst of thee, O Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his servants. 10Who smote great nations, and slew mighty kings; 11Sihon king of the Amorites, and Og king of Bashan, and all the kingdoms of Canaan: 12And gave their land for an heritage, an heritage unto Israel his people. 13Thy name, O LORD, endureth for ever; and thy memorial, O LORD, throughout all generations. 14For the LORD will judge his people, and he will repent himself concerning his servants.16

23Who remembered us in our low estate: for his mercy endureth for ever: 24And hath redeemed us from our enemies: for his mercy endureth for ever. 25Who giveth food to all flesh: for his mercy endureth for ever. 26O give thanks unto the God of heaven: for his mercy endureth for ever.17

Giants

The giants, the heroes of old, and descendents of the Nephillim survived the flood of Noah. The Rephaim are those who were remnants that survived. The following verse mentions them in context with battle that ended with the death of the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah. (blue underlines will take you to a link with Cross Daily and you can check out comparative translations of the passages and look at others as well if you like. ( I compiled this for online about 4 years ago, I do not know if the links work now).

Genesis 6:4There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore [children] to them: the same [became] mighty men, who [were] of old, men of renown.18

Genesis 14

5And in the fourteenth year came Chedorlaomer, and the kings that were with him, and smote the Rephaims in Ashteroth Karnaim, and the Zuzims in Ham, and the Emims in Shaveh Kiriathaim,19

In the following verses the record of giants being in opposition to Israel and their defeat gives more evidence of remnants from the people surviving the flood.

Numbers 13:33And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, [who come] of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.20

Deuteronomy 2:11 Who also were accounted giants, as the Anakims; but the Moabites call them Emims.21 Deuteronomy 2:20(That also was accounted a land of giants: giants dwelt in it in old time; and the Ammonites call them Zamzummims;22

Deuteronomy 3:11 For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of giants; behold, his bedstead [was] a bedstead of iron; it not in Rabbath of the children of Ammon? nine cubits [was] the length of it, and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a man.23 Deuteronomy 3:13 And the rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, [being] the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh; all the region of Argob, with all Bashan, which was called the land of giants.24 Joshua 12:4 And the coast of Og king of Bashan, [who was] of the remnant of the giants, that dwelt at Ashtaroth and at Edrei,25 Joshua 13:12 All the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei, who remained of the remnant of the giants. For these did Moses smite, and cast them out.26 Joshua 15:8 And the border went up by the valley of the son of Hinnom, to the south side of the Jebusite; the same Jerusalem: and the border went up to the top of the mountain that [lieth] before the valley of Hinnom westward, which [is] at the end of the valley of the giants northward:27 Joshua 17:15 And Joshua answered them, If thou [art] a great people, [then] go up to the wood, and cut down for thyself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the giants, if mount Ephraim is too narrow for thee.28 Joshua 18:16 And the border came down to the end of the mountain that [lieth] before the valley of the son of Hinnom, [and] which [is] in the valley of the giants on the north, and descended to the valley of Hinnom, to the side of Jebusi on the south, and descended to En-rogel,29 I Chronicles 20

4And it came to pass after this, that there arose war at Gezer with the Philistines; at which time Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Sippai, [i]that was of the children of the giant: and they were subdued. 5And there was war again with the Philistines; and Elhanan the son of Jair slew Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, whose spear staff was like a weaver’s beam. 6And yet again there was war at Gath, where was a man of great stature, whose fingers and toes were four and twenty, six on each hand, and six on each foot: and he also was the son of the giant. 7But when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea David’s brother slew him. 8These were born unto the giant in Gath; and they fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.30

"Michaelis says, ‘The tradition that giants formerly dwelt in this part, still remains in Arabia, only that it makes them rather taller than Moses does Og, and calls the land in which they lived, not Bashan, but Hadrach, which name occurs in Zechariah 9:1. I received this information from the verbal communication of a credible Arab, who was born on the other side of Jordan, about three days’ journey from Damascus.’"31

Zechariah 9

1The burden of the word of the LORD in the land of Hadrach, and Damascus shall be the rest thereof: when the eyes of man, as of all the tribes of Israel, shall be toward the LORD.32

God is telling us about the future of Israel after the body of Christ has been gathered and the nation of Israel is finally entreated of God in that day, our future, not just Zechariah’s. J. Vernon McGee had this to say about the prophecies in Zechariah 8 as follows.

"1. First is the expression, "Lord of hosts." Dr. Merrill Unger gives the interpretation of this expression as "Lord of armies," and that probably is a more literal translation. "The Lord of hosts" or "the Lord of armies" occurs eighteen times in this chapter. Apparently, He is very important in this chapter—"the Lord of hosts."… Then in chapter 8, especially in the first eight verses, we find that God’s ultimate purpose is not changed concerning His people—the nation Israel, the land, and Jerusalem. At the present moment, God is not fulfilling any prophecy concerning Israel. He is dealing today with the church; He is calling out a body of believers in the church. And the church and Israel are entirely two separate entities. When God will get through calling out the church, I do not know. It’s not geared to any man’s calendar at all. It’s on God’s calendar, but He has never let any of us see it. God’s Word doesn’t tell us when He will take the church out of this earth, but when He does, He will turn to the people of Israel again. These prophecies here in chapter 8 are simply saying that their return to the land in Zechariah’s day was very small but that it is an adumbration, a little miniature picture, of a return to the land that is coming in the future."33

In reference to the area identified as the original area ruled by Og, called Hadrach by Zechariah, God’s judgment falls at the hand of Alexander the Great. The following is the commentary by J. Vernon McGee.

"The burden of the word of the Lord." This word burden means judgment, a judgment of God. Alexander the Great was unwittingly God’s instrument of judgment. His forces subjugated "the land of Hadrach," taking the key towns, Damascus and Hamath. Damascus was the capital of Syria and still is today. Also, it continues to cause Israel a great deal of difficulty.34

Eden, or Paradise, a name that is synonymous of a heavenly location is deeply rooted in the mind of mankind, this is possibly what Plato meant by saying that "man is motivated by the dim recollection of a perfect state of being." For that reason countless books have carried the title of "Eden," and many have attempted to find the location of Eden of old.

The prophet Ezekiel reveals some interesting facts concerning Eden. Long before Adam had ever been placed there by G-d, Ezekiel reveals to us, the Garden of Eden had a previous tenant.

"Son of man, take up a lamentation for the king of Tyre, and say to him, 'Thus says the Lord G-D: "You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.

You were in Eden, the garden of G-d; every precious stone was your covering: the sardius, topaz, and diamond, Beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold. The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes was prepared for you on the day you were created.

You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; you were on the holy mountain of G-d; you walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones.

You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, till iniquity was found in you.

By the abundance of your trading you became filled with violence within, and you sinned; therefore I cast you as a profane thing out of the mountain of G-d; and I destroyed you, O covering cherub, from the midst of the fiery stones" (Ezekiel 28:12-16NKJ).

Just who was this entity ([i]cherub), and what was he doing there in Eden? The Scripture reveals that he was "the anointed cherub." The Hebrew word for "cherub" is "keruwb," same word used in Genesis for "cherubim;"

"So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life. Genesis 3:24 NKJ

According to Brown-Driver-Briggs Concordance the Strong number 3742 keruwb-a cherub, cherubim (plural); an angelic being .

1) as guardians of Eden

2) as flanking G-d's throne

3) as an image form hovering over the Ark of the Covenant

4) as the chariot of Jehovah (Yahweh) (figurative)

We know from the Scriptures that Lucifer was an angelic being, and in all probability this was Satan.

The bene elohim were a group of angelic beings who had turned away from God, and decided to make earth their home and live among the humans. The progeny which resulted from the relationship between the sons of God and humans were called the Nephilim. The Nephilim were genetically superior when compared with humans. The word "Nephilim" means "giant" and they are referred to as giants in the Bible. It is entirely possible that the legends of mythical gods such as the Greek and Roman gods, may have included the bene elohim and the Nephilim. Apparently, since the Nephilim were genetically superior, they may have even demanded that humans worship them as gods. Moses even makes the comment in Genesis 6:4 that "They were the heroes of old, men of renown". This implies that there were great legends of the Nephilim. The Book of Enoch tells us that the Nephilim meant to destroy (annihilate) the entire human race, so that only a their race would inherit the earth.

God announced that He would destroy the world in 120 years. This was done probably for two reasons: (1) to give mankind and chance to repent (2) allow Noah 120 years to construct the Ark.

The New Testament of the Bible testifies of the account of the Flood and offers additional information. Jesus Himself also testifies of the Great Flood.

Mathew 24:37-39 NKJV - Jesus speaking

37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away.

Luke 17:26-27 NKJV - Jesus speaking

26 "Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. 27 People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.

1 Peter 3:20 NKJV

20 .....God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water,

2 Peter 2:5-6 NKJV

4 For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment; 5 and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly;

2 Peter 3:3-7 NKJV - (In this account, Peter prophetically announced that a time would come in which people would deny the flood ever happened)

3knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, 4and saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation." 5For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, 6by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water.

Jude 6 NKJV

6And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day;
