Hello, all.
Now that Jade has finished The Rift, I believe she could go on to read Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series. She seems awful reluctant to do so, though, so I was hoping the members here could weigh in their opinions.
Thanks in advance,
Brother Vinny

Is it because of the volume of reading material involved? :teeth:

I wouldn't think it would be. It certainly can't be because of the size of the individual volumes. The Rift is a veritable 700-page doorstop of a book, but that didn't stop her from zipping through it.
(By the way-- I noticed Ric voted "No." I was just wondering if he's read the books.)

Yup. I should too. I picked one of them up from the library (they sell old books for fifty cents) but it wasn't the first book.. so I've been keeping an eye out for it. I can't even find it at bookstores.

/ot Ric might not like fantasy books, or he might be opposed to stories with magical elements in them. I think it's a "meat sacrificed to idols" issue.

Just read it, Jade. It won't hurt you. Besides, reading long books builds character?

Don't do it Jade. The first three books are fun and sweet, and your like, wow, I am hooked. Then each subsequent book makes you hate them all, and your self, a little bit more each time. Also, the characters, especially women, are hideously unrealistic.
Read George RR Martin's "Song of Fire and Ice" series. It has realistic characters, realistic events, and is much better written.

Fires of Heaven was good. Then not much happened for a few volumes.

Jade should most definatley read them. They are good, but IMHO the Terry Goodkind Sword of Truth series is alot better.

Maybe my expectations were too high--someone had told me they were even better than Lord of the Rings--but I was completely unimpressed by Jordan's writing style and even the story itself, which seemed to be a ripoff of every other fantasy series. Granted, I'm not that well-read in post-Tolkien fantasy.
I was intrigued by the concept of the Wheel itself, but the product did not appeal to me. I found the awkward romance almost painful. I will admit, of course, that I didn't make it past the first 100 pages.

(It should be noted that, while Jade has promissed to give the first book the ol' college try, it will be a while before she gets to it. She's now reading Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution, after which she'll be reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix.)

Oh, not the Atkins diet.
