a contradiction about saul and david

I Sa 17:39 and the verses back has Saul and David speaking before the battle, but 17:55-58 has Saul not knowing David and wondering whose son he is. Can't have it both ways!

SO whats the answer?>

Saul didn't know David's name nor his lineage in 17:39.

He talked with him a while before. Duh! so there is a contradiction! !

Actually, Saul NEVER asked who David is. He only asked who David's FATHER was. Here's the passage:

As Saul watched David going out to meet the Philistine, he said to Abner, commander of the army, "Abner, whose son is that young man?" Abner replied, "As surely as you live, O king, I don't know." The king said, "Find out whose son this young man is." As soon as David returned from killing the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul, with David still holding the Philistine's head. "Whose son are you, young man?" Saul asked him. David said, "I am the son of your servant Jesse of Bethlehem."

Also, as Bill the Cat pointed out, while David and Saul were talking before the battle, Saul never asked David his name. So, Saul had seen David's face before, but simply didn't know the name. Thus, no contradiction.

Ok, even if there was a contradiction, ( which it has been shown that its not ) that doesnt equate it to David and saul never existing.

One of David's sisters, Abigail, had had a son (Amasa) who's father was an Ishmaelite (see 1 Chronicles 13-17). Amasa's father looks like he could have been a proselyte to the faith of Israel or of mixed parentage since in 2 Samuel 17:25 he is referred to as Ithra the Israelite. Now if Saul knew enough about David's family to know that within the household of Jesse there was a male of 'unkosher' lineage, then it actually shows he had quite intimate knowledge of the family. It would suddenly become very important to know if David was the one who was of mixed/foreign lineage since Saul knew if David were to win he would likely become a hero.

He wanted to know whose son he was since the person's family would be exempt from taxes.
