Hello,

In the bible there are many quotes attributed to the biblical god. Below I am presenting a few statements which, if I am not mistaken, are all supposed to have come from the biblical god:

"Behold, I will corrupt your seed and spread dung upon your faces..."

Christian god-Malachi 2:3

"Behold the day of the Lord is coming, when the spoil taken from you will be divided in the midst of you. For I will gather the nations against Jerusalem to battle, and the city shall be taken and the houses plundered and the women ravished..."

Christian god-Zechariah 14:1

"...I will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the light of this sun."

Christian god-2 Samuel 12:11

"Behold the day of the Lord comes, cruel, with wrath and fierce anger...Whoever is found will be thrust through and whoever is caught will fall by the sword. Their infants will be dashed in pieces before their eyes, their houses will be plundered and their wives ravished."

Christian god-Isaiah 13:9, 13:15

"'Pass through the city after him, and smite; your eye shall not spare and you shall show no pity; slay old men outright, young men and maidens, little children and women...'"

Christian god-Ezekiel 9:5

"Behold, I am against you, says the Lord of hosts, and will lift up your skirts over your face; and I will let nations look on your nakedness and kingdoms on your shame. I will throw filth at you...."

Christian god-Nahum 3:5

"As for your male and female slaves whom you may have: you may buy male and female slaves from the nations that are round about you. You may also buy from among the strangers who sojourn with you and their families that are with you, who have been born in your land; and they may be your property. You may bequeath them to your sons after you, to inherit as a possession forever; you may make slaves of them, but over your bretheren the people of Israel you shall not rule, one over another, with harshness."

Christian god-Leviticus 25:44

"I will strew your flesh upon the mountains, and fill the valleys with your carcass. I will drench the land even to the mountains with your flowing blood..."

Christian god-Ezekiel 32:5

"I will fall upon them like a bear robbed of her cubs, I will tear open their breast, and there I will devour them like a lion, as a wild beast would rend them."

Christian god-Hosea 13:8

"And I will fill your mountains with the slain; on your hills and in your valleys and in all your ravines those slain with the sword shall fall...Then you shall know that I am the Lord."

Christian god-Ezekiel 35:8
I have a couple of questions regarding these quotes. For those Christians who think these words came from the biblical god, how sure are you that they actually came from this god? Is there any historical evidence that some guy wrote down this god's words as he spoke, or soon after? Is there any independant verification that these statements actually came from the biblical god?

If you don't think these words were uttered by the biblical god but were just made up by some ancient writers, would you then agree with me that they represent biblical falsehoods?

On the other hand, if you do think these words were spoken by the biblical god, what do you think they indicate about this god's personality, morality and mental health?

Thank you for your assistence

Jimbo

Disclaimer: I do not believe that the biblical god exists.

Jimbo...

I understand your point, but most of these quotes are dreadfully out of context.

For example, "'Pass through the city after him, and smite; your eye shall not spare and you shall show no pity; slay old men outright, young men and maidens, little children and women...'"

This takes place in a scene where Ezekiel is having a symbolic vision about what the Babylonians are going to do to Jerusalem. It only reveals that God is predicting the future. In fact, the scene also includes God's promise that he will intervene and save those who are "marked" with the cross on their forhead.

If you want to portray the character of Yahweh as murderous and bloodthirsty, there are much better quotes to use than these prophetic metaphors which represent future political events involving Israel.

If you had read through the Old Testament prophets, this would be obvious to you.

A better quote would be perhaps when Yahweh commands Moses to exterminate the Midianites, or when He commands Samuel to exterminate the Amalekites. However, as you should realize by now, most Christians view these commands as necessary to the continued survival of Israel.

If I'd also read the context, I'd conclude that He is righteous, just, fair and perfect.

What else would I conclude?

Thanks for your patience in the thread's I have previously committed myself to. Things are still difficult and topsy-turvy here, and I may actually start work somewhere this week (strong likelihood), so I'll do my best to answer some of those threads! See you in the forums...

When even our Christian leadership has committed to a strategy of compromising on "Do not murder" by supporting judges [like Alito], politicians [like Bush] and rulings that explicitly will kill certain innocent children, it is absurd for us to ask God to bless America. -- Bob Enyart, 1/18/06

RightIdea,

So do you think these quotes really come from God? If so, why?

Hey "Holding"-since you're a self-proclaimed bible expert, could you tell me if you think that your god made the statements above that are attributed to him? And if you do think these quotes are genuine, please explain why you think they are genuine.

If you do not think they are genuine, would you say that they represent bible errors?

Thanks for your help!

Just a technical point, but wouldn't the fact that all the verses come from the Old Testament make the attribution "Jewish God"?

I don't think that Jews would appreciate YHWH being labelled "Christian God".

Why not attribute the quotes to "Allah" or "Islamic God"? In fact, why not just say "GOD"?

Use of the label "Christian" seems somewhat bigoted.

Hail Jimbo, Master of Gas and Space!

since you're a self-proclaimed bible expert, could you tell me if you think that your god made the statements above that are attributed to him?

Wow, only little Jimbo needs things spelled out to him to this extent! Tell ya what, little man, you're a self-proclaimed expert on my motivations and thought life. Why don't you GUESS what the answer is??

And if you do think these quotes are genuine, please explain why you think they are genuine.

Wow, Jimbo. I'll answer that if you tell me why you think Julius Caesar did (or did not) say, "Et tu, Brute." Let's see if you actually have any methodology to speak of, or just rants. I vote rants!

Thanks for your help!

Too late for you, unfortunately!

Yes. Jimbo is throwing a temper tantrum:

Mr. "Holding,"

You avoided answering my questions. Shall we try again?

As a self-proclaimed bible expert, could you tell me if you think that your god made the statements above that are attributed to him? And if you do think these quotes are genuine, please explain why you think they are genuine.

If you do not think they are genuine, would you say that they represent bible errors?

Thank you in advance for your response.

If you cannot or or are unwilling to answer these questions, simply say so. If you avoid answering these questions two more times, I will have to assume that cannot or will not answer them.

Cheers,

Jimbo

My only comment is that chsalvia is not quite right. although it IS a vision, it IS god that orders the killing, and he did NOT show any mercy.

Then he said to them, "Defile the temple and fill the courts with the slain. Go!" So they went out and began killing throughout the city. 8 While they were killing and I was left alone, I fell facedown, crying out, "Ah, Sovereign LORD ! Are you going to destroy the entire remnant of Israel in this outpouring of your wrath on Jerusalem?"
9 He answered me, "The sin of the house of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great; the land is full of bloodshed and the city is full of injustice. They say, 'The LORD has forsaken the land; the LORD does not see.' 10 So I will not look on them with pity or spare them, but I will bring down on their own heads what they have done."
11 Then the man in linen with the writing kit at his side brought back word, saying, "I have done as you commanded."
But, killing children is righteous, as long as God orders it, heck, it's perfectly fine for him to order that pregnant women should be ripped apart. Gotta love that God! (and I do mean "got to")

I don't detect much outrage here. Jimbo brings up an issue that I'm sure many non-experts would like accessible answers to, as we all don't have the time, resources, or interest necessary to work out an exegesis of all the prophecies, etc. Since JP has already done the research and enjoys sharing his knowledge with us, perhaps he can put down the dukes and enlighten us?

I agree. The OP certainly doesn't seem like an argument to me, more like a few questions. I too wouldn't mind seeing some real responses from the well researched people here.
